Kennesaw, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University softball team rallied from an early three-run deficit but the Falcons were unable to pick up their first win of the year in a 3-2 loss to Mississippi State Friday afternoon in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial, hosted by Kennesaw State University.
After Mississippi State scored three times in the bottom of the first off of freshman pitcher Erin Greenwalt, senior pitcher Melissa Bott came on and shut down the Bulldogs bats the rest of the way. She went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. Greenwalt struggled with her control, giving up three walks and tossing a wild pitch.
The scored remained 3-0 until the top of the sixth when Bowling Green threatened to take the lead. Pinch-hitter Katie Yoho led off the frame with a walk and she advanced to third on Rachel Proehl's one-out walk. Paige Berger followed with a two-run single that cut the deficit to one. Erika Stratton followed with a single and Mississippi State went to the bullpen. Kylie Vry came on and got a fly out and a ground out to end the inning. The Falcons then went down in order in the seventh.
Both teams finished the game with six hits and just one extra base hit apiece, both of which were doubles. Berger and Proehl both went 2-for-3 on the afternoon and Andrea Arney had the team's double. Hannah Fulk's six-game hitting streak dating back to last year was snapped as she went 0-for-3.
Mississippi State improved to 6-5 with the win and Bowling Green fell to 0-6. The Falcons will be back in action against Georgia State at 6 p.m. Friday evening before playing two more games Saturday and a contest Sunday at the tournament.
