Bowling Green, Ohio – Akron set an Anderson Arena record for an opponent by making 16 three-pointers as the Zips rolled past the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team 89-54 Tuesday night. Despite the lopsided defeat, the two teams are now part of a four-way tie for fourth place in the MAC at 7-5.
After making 7-of-13 three-pointers in the first half, Akron made nine of its first 11 long range attempts in the second half to pull away from the Falcons. Brett McClanahan led the way by making 6-of-7 and scoring 18 points. Darryl Roberts was 3-for-5 from three-point range and four other players made at least one.
Bowling Green, on the other hand, went 0-for-8 from three-point range and shot just 31 percent from the field. It was the second time this year that the Falcons went an entire game without making a three but the team beat St. Louis the first time.
Early on, the game was evenly matched as Torian Oglesby made a pair of free-throws to tie the score at 8-8. Oglesby scored inside with 10:34 to go in the first half to pull the Falcons within three at 17-14 and the team had two possessions with a chance to cut into the deficit even further. However, a Scott Thomas jumper rimmed out and the Falcons turned it over on their next possession.
That started Akron on a 20-3 run that effectively put the game away at 37-17 with 2:04 to go. Thomas made a pair of free-throws with one second remaining in the first half to make it 41-23 at the break but the Falcons never got closer.
Akron blew the game wide open by making seven straight three-point attempts at one point in the second half and led by as many as 40 on three occasions.
A'uston Calhoun finished with a team-high 18 points for Bowling Green and added six rebounds and three steals. Thomas had 10 points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot. Danny McElroy came off the bench for six points and a blocked shot.
Bowling Green tied a season-low with eight turnovers for the game and forced Akron into 12. The Zips held a 44-33 rebounding edge but BG was better on the offensive glass, grabbing 16 to Akron's 11. The Falcons went to the free-throw line 22 times, making 16, while Akron was 9-for-10 at the line.
Akron improved to 16-10 overall and Bowling Green fell to 12-14. The Falcons will play a non-conference game Saturday at Youngstown State at 7:05 p.m. for the annual ESPN BracketBusters Series.
