Falcons Come From Behind To Beat Georgia State 4-3

Kennesaw, Ga. – The Bowling Green State University softball team scored three runs in the fifth to overcome a 3-1 deficit and defeat Georgia State 4-3 Friday evening in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament, hosted by Kennesaw State. The victory was the first of 2011 for the Falcons.
Bowling Green outhit Georgia State 9-7 and rallied with five of those hits in the fifth. Hannah Fulk opened the inning with a solo homerun, her second of the year. Rachel Proehl followed with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. She scored the tying run on Erika Stratton's one out triple. Andrea Arney then drove in the winning run with an RBI single to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
Zada Lines pitched the final three innings to get the win, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. She wriggled out of a jam in the fifth when Georgia State had a runner on third with one out by striking out the next two batters. Lines struck out the side in the sixth and escaped another jam in the seventh when Georgia State loaded the bases with two outs. She picked up another strikeout with the count full to end the game.
Bowling Green scored a run in the first when Proehl singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Stratton then singled and Proehl scored on a fielding error to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Georgia State battled back with three runs on four hits in the fourth before Bowling Green posted the game-winning runs in the fifth.
Erin Greenwalt pitched three innings and gave up two earned runs, striking out six, for the Falcons. Melissa Bott then came in to pitch an inning before Lines closed out the final three frames on the mound.
Offensively, Proehl went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Stratton and Missy Bowman each went 2-for-3 as well and Stratton drove in two runs. Fulk, Berger, and Arney each had a hit for Bowling Green.
Georgia State falls to 5-8 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 1-6. The Falcons will continue play in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Saturday against Mercer at 10:30 a.m. and against the host school, Kennesaw State, at 6 p.m.
