Kennesaw, Ga. – Bowling Green sophomore Paige Berger hit her first home run of the 2011 season Saturday evening but the Falcons lost to Kennesaw State 3-1 in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial. That result followed a 13-0 loss to Mercer to open the day at the event.
Berger's first-inning blast is the 13th of her career, moving her into a tie for sixth place all-time at Bowling Green. It also staked starting pitcher Melissa Bott to an early lead.
For the most part, Bott pitched affectively through three innings, allowing Kennesaw State to scratch out just one second-inning run on a walk, sacrifice and single. She was replaced by Zada Lines to begin the fourth inning.
Lines pitched well in her first two innings of work but ran into trouble in the sixth. After giving up a leadoff walk, she retired the next two batters but Kennesaw State went to work, getting two singles, a walk and a wild pitch with two outs to plate two runs.
Bowling Green went down in order in the seventh to end the contest. Lines' pitching record fell to 1-1 on the year with the loss.
Andrea Arney went 2-for-3 for the Falcons as the two teams each had six hits on the evening.
In the first game of the day, Mercer scored six times in the second to blow it open, added a run in both the third and fourth innings and then scored five in the fifth to put it away. Rachel Proehl had the Falcons' only hit and Melissa Bott took the loss on the mound, falling to 0-4.
Bowling Green falls to 1-8 with the two losses. The Falcons will play MAC opponent Ball State in a non-conference game to complete tournament play Sunday.
