Senior Christine Chiricosta continues to move up BGSU's wins lists
Falcons Top Cincinnati, 5-2, Saturday Night
February 05, 2011 | Women's Tennis
BGSU has won five of the last six matches
The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point, then captured four of six singles matches for a 5-2 victory over the University of Cincinnati Saturday night (Feb. 5). The non-conference dual match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-2 in dual-match play this season. BGSU has won five of the last six matches.
Falcon senior Christine Chiricosta, who last weekend became her school's all-time leader in combined wins, won at both singles and doubles to move ever closer to the top of those BGSU lists as well. Chiricosta teamed with sophomore Maddy Eccleston for a dominant 8-1 victory at the top doubles flight, then lost only two total games in her singles win over UC's Ksenia Slynko.
Chiricosta now has 79 career singles wins, moving into a tie for second place at BGSU with Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) and Julie Weisblatt (1994-97). Chiricosta is only two singles wins away from tying the record of 81, set by her former teammate Stefanie Menoff (2006-09).
Chiricosta owns sole possession of second place on the doubles wins list, with 77. Jenny Cheung (1995-98) holds that BGSU record with 84 doubles victories.
The senior co-captain, who broke Bissinger's school record for combined career victories last weekend, now has a total of 156 in her storied Falcon career.
BGSU took the doubles point as, in addition to the top-flight win, head coach Penny Dean saw her team win at the third level as well. Sophomores Mary Hill and Katie Grubb matched Christine Chiricosta and Eccleston's feat, winning by an 8-1 final.
With the doubles point decided, the second-flight match went to a tiebreaker. Falcon freshmen Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland battled UC's duo of Elise Woulfe and Ashleigh Witte to a 7-7 draw, before the Bearcats pulled out the tiebreaker for an 8-7 victory.
In singles play, Nikki Chiricosta matched her sister's performance by losing a total of only two games. The younger Chiricosta dropped only one game in each set in a sweep of Caitlin O'Gara at the third flight.
Eccleston also won in straight sets, defeating Woulfe at the fifth flight, while junior co-captain Jessica Easdale picked up a win at the sixth level. Easdale dropped a narrow first set to Safiyya Ismail in a lengthy tiebreaker, then was leading in the second set when Ismail was forced to retire.
UC's two points came at the second and fourth flights. At the second flight, Jasmine Lee picked up a win over Hill, while the fourth-flight match saw Witte down Reuland.
BGSU returns to action next weekend, playing just one match. The Falcons will head to Fort Wayne for a Saturday evening (Feb. 12) dual vs. IPFW. Start time is 7:00 p.m.
