BGSU travels to Fort Wayne
The Bowling Green State University tennis team, having won five of the last six matches, takes to the road for a tough test this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a Saturday (Feb. 12) match against a powerful IPFW squad. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Pine Ridge Racquet & Fitness Club.

The Falcons are off to a 5-2 start in dual-match play, including a 2-2 mark in road matches and a 3-2 record in all contests away from home. Last weekend, Dean's squad saw a four-match win streak snapped with a 7-0 loss to Michigan State on Friday (Feb. 4), but bounced back by downing Cincinnati, 5-2, the following evening.
BGSU faces a difficult task this weekend, to say the least. IPFW is off to a 6-1 start heading into Saturday's action. The Mastodons will host Ball State on Saturday afternoon before taking on the Falcons that evening. The 'Dons have won five-straight matches, with the team's only dual-match loss coming on the road to MSU. IPFW's victims to date include Toledo, Robert Morris, Cleveland State, Detroit, Eastern Illinois and Wright State.
Last year, IPFW posted an overall dual-match record of 24-6. Head coach Eric Burns guided the Mastodons to a perfect 8-0 record in Summit League play and the school's second-straight conference regular-season title. Then, the 'Dons won the Summit League Tournament to advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.
IPFW won 21 consecutive matches last year, a streak that lasted until a loss to #5 Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Championships.
The 'Dons are led by senior Amy Recht, who has been named the Summit League's Player of the Year in each of her first three seasons. Classmate Yuka Kobayashi, a transfer from Western Michigan, is the reigning SL Player of the Week after another senior, Ingrid Ballus, had won the award the previous week.
Recht, the lone native of the United States on the IPFW roster, is a product of Fort Wayne's Homestead H.S. She was teammates with BGSU sophomore Jade Johnson at Homestead, as the duo helped the Spartans to tremendous success.
Johnson is one of three Indiana natives on the BGSU roster. Fellow sophomores Katie Grubb (Elkhart, Ind.) and Mary Hill (Munster, Ind.) also hail from the Hoosier State.
The Falcons' match at IPFW is the first of seven consecutive road or neutral-site matches. BGSU will not play at home again until April.
The Chiricosta sisters pace the Falcons in singles wins to date, as freshman Nikki Chiricosta is a team-best 17-4 on the year, including a 5-2 mark in dual-match play at the third flight. Senior Christine Chiricosta, the winningest player in school history, has a 15-5 record this season, and is 4-3 in first-flight action during the dual-match portion of the season.
In addition to Nikki Chiricosta, two other players are 5-2 in singles play since the start of the dual-match schedule. Sophomore Maddy Eccleston has won five of her seven matches at the fifth flight, while junior Jessica Easdale is 5-2 at flight number six.
On the year, BGSU singles competitors are a combined 92-40, while Falcon doubles teams have combined to go 43-21 to date.
BGSU and IPFW have met only once before in dual-match play. The Falcons posted a 6-1 win over the 'Dons last year (Jan. 30, 2010) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
The two teams crossed paths twice in the fall, as IPFW came to Bowling Green for the season-opening BGSU Invitational (Sept. 18-19, 2010), and both teams participated in Michigan State's Spartan Invitational the following weekend (Sept. 24-26, 2010).
Following the IPFW match, the Falcons will head to Colorado for a pair of contests next weekend. BGSU will play a Friday (Feb. 18) match at Air Force, and will remain in Colorado Springs for a dual against Colorado State the next day (Feb. 19).
