Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team erased a 10-point second half deficit but Kent State used a 10-4 run in the final 2:15 to hand the Falcons a 63-57 defeat Tuesday night in Anderson Arena on Senior Night.
The contest was the next-to-last men's basketball regular season game ever in Anderson Arena as the Falcons will close down the building Saturday against Buffalo. That game carries great importance as a win would secure one more game in The House That Roars for the first round of the MAC Tournament but a loss would put Bowling Green on the road in that opening game.
The game also served as Senior Night as the Falcons honored Joe Jakubowski and Mike Dabney. Jakubowski ranks sixth in career assists at Bowling Green, eighth in career three-pointers made and 10th in career steals. Dabney is a walk-on who joined the team for the first time this year.
After falling behind 49-39 with 9:20 to go, Bowling Green mounted a comeback as Mike Dabney scored inside and A'uston Calhoun completed a traditional three-point play with 8:02 left to make it 49-44. Jordon Crawford knocked down a jumper to cut the deficit to three but Michael Porrini answered for Kent State with 6:13 left.
Calhoun was fouled and knocked down two free-throws on the ensuing possession and Kent State came up empty on a three-pointer. Scott Thomas hit a jumper with 5:01 left that brought Bowling Green to within one.
After Porrini scored on another jumper, Thomas made a pair of free-throws and Porrini turned the ball over. Dabney was fouled inside and made 1-of-2 free-throws to tie the score at 53-53 with 2:44 left. However, Porrini hit a tough jumper with 2:15 left and, after a Bowling Green turnover, Rodriguez Sherman followed with a three-pointer that made it 58-53. Kent State made 5-of-6 free-throws down the stretch for the win.
Kent State shot 46 percent for the game but 67 percent in the second half to keep the Falcons at bay. Bowling Green held the Golden Flashes to just 29 percent shooting in the opening half but trailed 23-17 as Thomas and Calhoun sat on the bench for much of the first 20 minutes, each saddled with two fouls.
Thomas picked up his second foul just 89 seconds into the game and did not return in the first half. Calhoun was called for his second foul with 12:28 left in the first half and also did not see any more court time in the opening 20 minutes.
Despite that, Joe Jakubowski's three-pointer with 5:55 left gave Bowling Green a 17-15 lead, but Kent State closed with the final eight points for the halftime lead. The second-half was a much more fluid affair offensively as the Golden Flashes built the lead to as many as 10 points on a handful of occasions before the late rally.
Calhoun led Bowling Green with 15 points and Crawford added 13, six assists, three steals and three rebounds. Dabney came off the bench for a career-high eight points.
As a team, Bowling Green held a 34-33 rebounding edge and had just one more turnover than Kent State. The Falcons were just 41 percent shooting however.
Kent State improves to 20-10 overall and 11-4 in MAC play. The Falcons fall to 12-18 overall and 7-8 in conference action and will close out the regular season Saturday at home against Buffalo at 1 p.m.
