20-match regular-season slate includes nine contests at Cochrane Field
Bowling Green State University women's soccer coach Andy Richards has announced the team's schedule for the fall of 2011. The Falcons are slated to play a total of 20 regular-season contests, including nine inside the friendly confines of Cochrane Field.
BGSU Women's Soccer - 2011 Schedule
“I am excited about our 2011 schedule and eager for the season to arrive,” said Richards, who enters his 12th season at the BGSU helm. “We have a number of highly-challenging non-conference contests, and are pleased to have the chance to play a total of nine regular-season games in front of our home crowd. We are looking for a big turnaround in 2011.”
The Falcons' nine non-conference matches include four games at home. BGSU plays five of the season's first seven games on the road, beginning with a trip to Illinois to face a pair of first-time opponents on opening weekend. The Brown and Orange will open the season witih an August 19 game at Loyola (Ill.), and will continue on to Normal, Ill., to face Illinois State two days later (Aug. 21).
The home opener is set for Sunday, Aug. 28, against Detroit, and the Falcons will open the month of September by taking on a second-straight Horizon League foe, heading several hours east to face Cleveland State (Sept. 2).
A home contest vs. Niagara (Sept. 4) is followed by trips to Michigan State (Sept. 9) and Youngstown State (Sept. 11). The MSU match continues the Falcons' longest-running non-conference series. The Falcons and Spartans have played at least once in every season since BGSU added a varsity program in 1997, and the two teams had an additional meeting in the 2005 NCAA Championships.
The Falcons close the non-conference schedule with home matches vs. a pair of foes from the state of Indiana. BG hosts IPFW (Sept. 16) and Valparaiso (Sept. 18) in the final tuneups before Mid-American Conference action begins. The match with Valpo will be the Falcons' first since the teams attempted to play a match in September of 2003, when the teams' scheduled contest in NW Indiana was cancelled due to thunderstorms.
BGSU opens league play with a weekend trip to face Buffalo (Sept. 23) and Kent State (Sept. 25), before returning home for a season-long three-game homestand. That stretch begins with a Sept. 30 match vs. arch-rival Toledo, and includes contests against Ball State (Oct. 2) and Eastern Michigan (Oct. 7).
Three-straight road matches follow, against Central Michigan (Oct. 9), Akron (Oct. 14) and Ohio (Oct. 16), before BG closes the home regular-season slate with a weekend set vs. Western Michigan (Oct. 21) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 23). The regular-season concludes with a trip to Oxford to face Miami on Thursday, Oct. 27.
The 2011 MAC Tournament will begin on Sunday, Oct. 30, with quarterfinal games at campus sites. The four survivors from that day's play will converge upon the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals on Nov. 4 and the championship game on Nov. 6. The MAC Tournament winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs.
“Our goal every season is to play consistently well, achieve a winning season and qualify for the MAC post-season tournament,” said Richards. “We anticipate our difficult non-conference schedule will help to prepare us for the conference schedule, and that we will be playing our best soccer of the season when the MAC Tournament rolls around.”
