Falcons Seek To Capture Spring Challenge Cup
March 31, 2011 | Women's Golf
For the second consecutive year, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team will open April by facing Ohio University in a match play event, with the winner capturing the Spring Challenge Cup.
This year's format features a total of 36 holes on Saturday (April 2), the first day of play. The first 18 holes will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be played in the alternate-shot format. Once that round of matches is finished, the second round of 18 holes will begin. The second set of matches will use the best-ball format.
On the first day, each round of 18 holes includes three matches, with each school's roster of six players split into groups of two and paired with a group from the other school. Pairings for each round of play may be different.
Overall, six points will be awarded on Saturday.
On Sunday, a series of six individual 18-hole matches begins at 11:00 a.m., with the winner of each match securing a point for their school. As on Saturday, six points will be awarded for Sunday's play.
Ohio defeated Bowling Green in 2010 by a total of nine points to three. The Falcons won two of the three alternate-shot matches, as well as an individual match.
This year's Falcon team includes three players who did not participate in last year's event. BGSU's senior co-captains, Lauren and Marisa Glew, will join sophomore Amy Ruthenberg in returning to the event.
Marisa Glew was BGSU's lone individual match winner in 2010, as she defeated Ohio's Jordan Fesh, 4 and 3. She will have an opportunity to repeat that success against Fesh during Sunday's individual matches. Glew also helped secure one of the Falcons' two alternate-shot wins, joining Paula DiFrancesco in defeating Ohio's Colleen Lienesch and Erin Cahill.
Freshmen standouts Kelsey Benson and Bailey Arnold, who leads all current Falcons in scoring average, will make their Spring Challenge Cup debut. BGSU's team also includes sophomore Jen Blanchard.
Blanchard last played competitively for the Falcons in the 2010 Falcon Invitational, but according to head coach Stephanie Young, the time is right for Blanchard to play, and the spot in the lineup is well-deserved. Blanchard, a native of Fishers, will also have the pleasure of playing on her home golf course. Results will be available during the weekend as each round of play concludes.
