April 18, 2011 | Baseball, General, Women's Tennis
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Cody Apthorpe and tennis player Mary Hill.
Male Athlete of the Week
Cody Apthorpe, a sophomore from Windham, Ohio, set the tone for much of the weekend with his first career complete game victory, allowing just two runs on nine hits over nine innings in a win over rival Toledo Friday. He added four strike outs and just one walk, retiring the side in order in three of the first four innings. He held the Rockets scoreless for six consecutive innings and needed just 97 pitches for the complete game.
Female Athlete of the Week
Mary Hill, a sophomore from Munster, Ind., went 4-0 on the week and had match-clinching victories in both of BGSU's wins over the weekend. The team beat both Eastern Michigan and Toledo by identical 4-3 scores. She teamed with Nikki Chiricosta for an 8-1 win over EMU and and 8-3 win against Toledo in doubles play.
