Bowling Green, Ohio – With six 18-hole matches remaining, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team needs a near-perfect Sunday in order to capture the 2011 Spring Challenge Cup.

Playing at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind., the Falcons fell behind early and finished play on Saturday (April 2) with a 5-1 deficit in their dual match-play event with Ohio University.

In this tournament, the two teams play a series of 12 matches – six each on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of each match receives one point (each team receives a half-point if the match ends on a tie). The first team to earn 6.5 points or more is declared the winner.

Saturday's play consisted of foursome matches. The first set of three matches were alternate shot, while the second set of matches were best ball. For each 18-hole round, Bowling Green's group of six players was divided into three teams of two players and paired with a two-person team from Ohio.

The Falcons' lone point of the day came during the first 18 holes, when Lauren Glew and Bailey Arnold defeated Ohio's Jordan Fesh and Megan Weaver, 4 & 3.

In the other two alternate shot matches, Amy Ruthenberg and Marisa Glew fell 3 & 2 to Meryl Weaver and Kara Brinkmann. Erin Cahill and Sarah Tranelli won by a score of 6 & 5 against Jen Blanchard and Kelsey Benson.

Ohio swept the three best-ball matches. Falcon head coach Stephanie Young paired BGSU's two freshmen, Kelsey Benson and Bailey Arnold, against Kara Brinkmann and Sarah Tranelli. Ohio won that match, 3 & 2. Also paired together were the senior co-captains, sisters Lauren and Marisa Glew. They fell to Meryl and Megan Weaver, 4 & 3.

In the tightest match of the day, Jen Blanchard and Amy Ruthenberg fell, 1-up, to Erin Cahill and Jordan Fesh.

Sunday's six matches will be individual head-to-head rounds of 18. To win the Spring Challenge Cup, Bowling Green must either sweep the six matches or win five and tie one. If Ohio wins even one match on Sunday, they win the tournament for the second consecutive year.
