Falcons Culminate Season At MAC Championships This Weekend
April 20, 2011 | Women's Golf
The road to the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships concludes this week for the Bowling Green State University women's golf team when they play 54 holes between Friday and Sunday (April 22-24) at the Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
This will be the second time that eight of the nine teams in the field will play at the Lonagberger course this sseason. In October, the eight teams (plus Xavier and Cleveland State) played in the MAC Preview. Only Kent State did not attend.
The tournament consists of 18 holes on each day of the event, to be played on a par-72 course that measures 6,073 yards. Players will tee off in staggered ten-minute intervals from the first hole, beginning at 7:40 a.m. each morning.
Falcon efforts will be led by freshman Bailey Arnold. Arnold holds BGSU's best per-round scoring average, as she tallies just 79.88 strokes per 18 holes. She owns the low round of the season for the current team (70) and the team's only top-ten finish of the spring schedule. Arnold did not compete in October's MAC Preview tournament and will thus make her debut at Longaberger on Friday.
Senior co-captains Lauren and Marisa Glew play as Falcons for the final time this weekend. Lauren ranks second on the current team in scoring average (81.69) and shot rounds of 83 and 79 (162) at the MAC Preview to earn 15th place. Marisa is coming off of her best finish (by place) this season as she earned 22nd at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational. She also played at the MAC Preview, finishing with a total of 178.
The other two spots in this weekend's lineup are occupied by Amy Ruthenberg and Paula DiFrancesco. Ruthenberg also posted her season-best finish at the Falcon Invitational. She placed 16th after an 83 on Saturday. Ruthenberg has competed in all 19 of BGSU's rounds this season. DiFrancesco, like Arnold, did not play in the MAC Preview; she is seeking to improve her per-round average of 84.18.
The team enters the championship tournament with an overall 322.00 average, which ranks eighth in the conference. The lead Northern Illinois by over four strokes per round.
Tournament history has been dominated by Kent State, who has won each of the 12 MAC team championshps and ten of the 12 individual championships. Bowling Green's highest finish as a team is fifth, while their best individual finish is third.
Tee times for the first round have been determined, and the Falcon group will join Eastern Michigan and Ohio in the middle five of the day's 15 groups. DiFrancesco tees off first for the Falcons, at 8:30. Marisa Glew, Ruthenberg, Lauren Glew, and Arnold all follow, in that order. Arnold is last to tee off for BGSU (9:10).
Times for the rest of the weekend are determined by tournament standings.
