Falcons Outhit Huskies But Drop Contest; Game Two Rained Out

DeKalb, Ill. – Despite outhitting Northern Illinois 9-2, the Bowling Green softball team lost to Northern Illinois 4-3 Friday afternoon. Game two was called for rain with the Falcons holding an 11-5 lead.

Hannah Fulk had two home runs and seven RBI in game two but the contest was called with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, just two outs shy from being an official contest.

Erin Greenwalt gave up just two hits over the first 4 1/3 innings but ran into some trouble with walks. Zada Lines struck out three batters without allowing a hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.

The Falcons jumped on top early as Fulk opened the game with a single and Rachel Proehl followed with a double that drove her in for a 1-0 lead. Northern Illinois, though, tied the score in the bottom of the first without a hit. The Huskies worked a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch then scored the tie run.

Bowling Green again took the lead in the top of the third as Paige Berger drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Andrea Arney then singled to drive in Berger for a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Northern Illinois again struck back with a two-run home run to take a 3-2 lead, but the Falcons tied it right back up in the top of the fourth. Melissa West singled up the middle and Fulk doubled to tie the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies again took the lead with a solo homer for the final scoring of the game. Over the final two innings, Bowling Green's only offense came on a two-out single from Proehl in the top of the seventh.

Proehl went 3-for-4 for the game and Fulk went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Northern Illinois improves to 19-19 overall and 9-3 in MAC play with the win, while Bowling Green falls to 7-25 overall and 1-10 in league play. The Falcons play at Western Michigan Saturday and Sunday.
