Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green softball team rallied with a three-run sixth inning in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader but the Falcons came up one-run short of tying the game and lost a non-conference doubleheader to IPFW 12-2 and 5-4.
IPFW, which is tied atop the Summit League standings, improved to 25-10-1 with the wins, while Bowling Green fell to 7-29 overall.
Bowling Green trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in the second game but threatened when Lindsay Arney singled to open the inning and Hannah Fulk followed with a walk. Rachel Proehl singled to drive in a run and Paige Berger walked to load the bases with nobody out in a 5-2 game. Katie Yoho ripped a one out double off the center field wall to plate to more runs and make it 5-4. But IPFW switched pitchers and Megan Flenniken forced a ground out and picked up a strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fulk gave the Falcons life with a two-out single but Flenniken struck out Proehl to end the game.
Bowling Green jumped out on top in the second game as Proehl tripled in the first and scored on Berger's sacrifice fly. IPFW came back with four runs in the fourth and an important insurance run in the fifth to build the 5-1 lead.
Yoho went 2-for-3 in the second game with a pair of RBI and Proehl was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jessica Odell, who had pitched just 2.0 innings all year prior to the game, started and threw the first 3 2/3 innings before making way for Melissa Bott. Bott gave up just one earned run over the final 3 1/3 innings.
In the opener, IPFW jumped out quickly with a five-run first, added two more in the third, and then posted another five-run frame in the fourth. In the first, the Mastodons were helped by four walks and three wild pitches.
Bowling Green got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Fulk singled through the left side to lead off the inning. Proehl followed with a single and Berger walked to load the bases with no outs. Andrea Arney then walked to push Fulk home and Yoho drove in another run on a sacrifice fly.
IPFW had nine hits in the game and drew eight walks, getting help from two Bowling Green errors in the Mastodons' five-run fourth inning.
Bowling Green will be back in action Friday when the Falcons host Miami (Ohio) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
