May 10, 2011 | Gymnastics
Dawn Christman, Amber Brewer, Monica Eaton, Sunny Marchand and Danielle Wishart, five members of the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team, were honored by the Mid-American Conference this morning (May 10). Christman was named to the Academic All-MAC Team, while the other four earned Academic Honorable Mention.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Christman owns a 3.63 grade-point average while majoring in exercise science. The junior advanced to Regionals this season on the floor exercise for the first time in her career. She made a name for herself on the floor exercise all season, scoring at least a 9.800 five different times, including a 9.825 at the MAC Championships, finishing sixth (she won the event in 2010).
Brewer also maintains the same 3.63 GPA, but is majoring in secondary education. Her best week came versus Kentucky and George Washington where she scored a season-best 9.825 on bars, earning MAC Specialist of the Week honors. She finished seventh at the MAC Championships in the same event, scoring a 9.750.
Eaton, a native of Kearney, Mo., maintains a 3.80 GPA while majoring in criminal justice. The sophomore won the bars twice this season, including a 9.775 at Northern Illinois and 9.675 versus Ball State. She also earned medalist honors on beam twice in 2011.
Marchand maintains a 3.66 GPA. The sophomore suffered through numerous injuries throughout 2011, but still managed to finish first on bars versus Illinois-Chicago (9.675) and posted a season-best 9.700 on the same event versus Western Michigan and Ohio State. She also won the floor exercise once this season, scoring a 9.750 at Northern Illinois.
Wishart, the third sophomore of this group has a 3.43 GPA, while majoring in political science. The Bethesda, Mary., native battled through several injuries throughout the season, but still managed to record at least a 9.750 on the vault in five of her six meets, which included a 9.850 at Kentucky and a 9.825 at the MAC Championships.
