With the victory, the Titans improve to 3-1-0 on the season, and UDM has won three-straight matches, scoring 12 goals in those three games. The Falcons drop to 0-3-0.
Nina Carter and Kaitlyn Quarrell each scored second-half goals for the Titans. Dzuris, Carter and Quarrell each were set up nicely by Abby McCollum, who had her second three-assist game of the young season.
Emily Oberheim had four saves to pick up the shutout. Oberheim was aided by her defenders as well, as the Titans had one team save when a player blocked a BGSU shot on the goal line.
For the Falcons, redshirt junior Becca Ison had eight saves in net, and could hardly be faulted for any of the three goals she allowed.
The Titans fired the first seven shots of the match, but the game remained scoreless. Ison made back-to-back saves against Quarrel and Dzuris within a 60-second span. First, after Quarrell made a run past several BG defenders, the UDM sophomore looked to beat Ison to the near post. But, the Falcon 'keeper made a diving save to knock the shot over the end line for a corner kick.
Off of that corner, Dzuris redirected a hard shot on target, but Ison was able to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
Midway through the period, Carter fired a laser that hit the top-left corner of the goal, where the goalpost meets the crossbar. That shot bounded away, and the Falcons cleared it out of the danger area.
With 20 minutes left before halftime, McCollum's crossing ball found the head of Lauren Roffey, but her shot, the Titans' seventh of the day, was gathered in by Ison.
Then, the Falcons went on the offensive. After seeing UDM take the first seven shots of the day, the home team fired the next five shots at the north end of the field. With just over 19 minutes left before halftime, sophomore Tracy Togba received a pass and dribbled through several Titan defenders. But, Togba's subsequent shot went just wide right.
Just over a minute later, Togba blocked a UDM defender's clearing attempt and quickly shot from the left side of the penalty area, forcing Oberheim to make the save at the near post.
Junior Emily Rothwell combined with Togba to work the ball into the Titan end of the field once again, and sophomore Madeline Wideman hit a shot that went just wide, hitting the right-side netting.
Perhaps the Falcons' best chance of the day came off of the boot of senior Megan Amann. Wideman played a right-side cross to Amann, who was on the left side of the net. Amann settled the ball and fired a shot from approximately 12 yards out. Her shot beat Oberheim and was headed toward the far post, but a Detroit defender was able to knock the ball off of the goal line.
Then, against the run of play, the Titans suddenly got on the scoreboard. With 8:27 left in the half, Dzuris took a short pass from McCollum and fired a shot from about 20 yards out that found the back of the net. McCollum picked up the lone assist on the goal. Neither team could muster another shot attempt before halftime, and the visitors took a one-nil lead into the break.
The Falcons were on the attack as the second half began. BGSU took four shots in the first nine minutes, including three before five minutes had expired in the period. But, none of those shots found their way past Oberheim.
Ison was forced to make several difficult saves as the match neared the 60-minute mark. Carter received a through-ball after a BG defender was unable to head it away, and the UDM striker was relatively unmarked as she uncorked a shot from Ison's right. The BG 'keeper made a difficult save, but the rebound went to Quarrell on the other side of the six-yard box. Quarrell's hard shot was on target, but Ison was able to grab it.
With 26 minutes left in the half, however, the Titans doubled the lead. A throw-in by Alyssa Korson, deep in the BGSU end of the field, found McCollum. McCollum turned, shook her defender and brought the ball along the end line on the left side of the pitch. After eluding another would-be defender, she slid a pass to the onrushing Carter, who had an easy finish. There was precious little that Ison could do as Carter's shot, taken from only 10 yards out, rocketed into the upper half of the net.
Then, in the 78th minute, McCollum again set up one of her teammates for an easy shot. This time, Dzuris played a ball ahead to McCollum, and the UDM sophomore made a long run down the left side of the field and into the penalty area. She forced Ison to commit, then played a pass to Quarrell on her right. The pass was deflected, but the ball went directly to Quarrell, who fired it home to close the scoring.
The Titans had a 20-13 advantage in total shot attempts, and UDM took 11 shots on goal to the Falcons' five. Ison, as mentioned, had eight saves, making four stops in each half.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend, taking to the road for a Friday night (Sept. 2) match against Cleveland State before returning home to face Niagara next Sunday (Sept. 4). The CSU match kicks off at 7:00 p.m., while the NU contest starts at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
