Falcons Dominate Idaho For 32-15 Season-Opening Win

Moscow, Idaho - The Bowling Green State University football team opened the 2011 season in impressive fashion, defeating Idaho 32-15 in the Kibbie Dome Thursday night. The Falcons scored 30 unanswered points to lead 30-7 at the half.
Idaho went 78 yards in six plays on its first possession to go ahead 7-0, but Bowling Green took over from there. Eugene Cooper had a 76-yard reception with 7:38 left in the first quarter to tie the score and then caught a 24-yard pass with 1:33 left in the first for a 14-7 lead.
Jordan Hopgood scored from nine yards out in the second and Anthon Samuel punched it in from a yard away for a 27-7 lead. Kyle Burkhardt made a 39-yard field goal with 4:28 left in the first half for a 30-7 lead.
In the second half, Bowling Green's only scoring came on a Chris Jones quarterback sack for a safety in the fourth quarter.
Samuel finished the game with 22 carries for 141 yards. Matt Schilz was 19-of-31 for 291 yards and Cooper had four catches for 110 yards.
Idaho falls to 0-1 with the loss and Bowling Green moves to 1-0. The Falcons will host Morgan State in the team's home opener Saturday at 7 p.m.
Notes
*Seven players made their first career start: Ted Ouellet, Paul Swan, D.J. Lynch, DeVon McKoy, Ryland Ward, Dominique Wharton and Kendall Montgomery.
*Schilz matches his longest career pass, a 76-yard touchdown to Eugene Cooper. It was Cooper's career long reception as well. Cooper finished the game with a career-best four catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
* BGSU's highest offensive total in 2010 was 414 yards versus Ohio. BGSU had 377 yards in the first half alone. The Falcons ended the day with 478 yards.
*Freshman Anthon Samuel finished the day with 141 yards on 22 carries. The last Falcon freshman to go over 100 rushing yards in his first career game was Freddie Barnes on Sept. 2, 2006 versus Wisconsin in Cleveland Browns Stadium. Barnes finished that game with 158 yards on 29 carries.
*Brian Schmiedebusch had a heck of a start to his Falcon career, averaging 55.8 yards per punt, including two punts being downed inside the 5-yardline. The Ottawa, Ohio, native added an 81-yard punt, tied for the second-longest in BGSU history.
*Matt Schilz had a career-best 291 yards passing.
*Chris Jones had three tackles for loss, two sacks and forced a fumble
