Keefe Courts are located on Stadium Drive, between Steller Field (baseball) and the Meserve Softball Field. Some matches will be held at Bowling Green High School. Play begins at 9:00 a.m. each day.
Head coach Penny Dean enters her 22nd season at the BGSU helm. She and the Falcons will host a tourney field that includes Cleveland State, Detroit, Duquesne, Evansville, IPFW, IUPUI, Toledo and Xavier. Team scores will not be kept, but individual champions will be crowned at each of the eight singles and four doubles flights.
"We are excited to get the season started and see how we match up with some teams from around the region," said Dean. "We are excited about welcoming Duquesne and Evansville, two BGSU Invitational newcomers, to town this weekend, and we are also glad that the other teams are returning to participate in the tournament again this year."
Dean's seven-player roster includes two sophomores, four juniors and -- for the second-straight year -- only one senior. The list of returnees includes Jessica Easdale (Dublin, Ohio); juniors Maddy Eccleston (Toledo, Ohio), Katie Grubb (Elkhart, Ind.), Mary Hill (Munster, Ind.) and Jade Johnson (Fort Wayne, Ind.); and sophs Nikki Chiricosta (Avon Lake, Ohio) and Emily Reuland (Oswego, Ill.).
The BGSU Invitational is the first of five total tourneys on the Falcons' fall schedule. BGSU will venture to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Fall MAC Tournament (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), to the Glass City for Toledo's Rocket Invitational (Oct. 14-15) and to East Lansing, Mich., for the Spartan Invite (Nov. 4-6). Additionally, selected team members will participate in the ITA Midwest Regional in Columbus, Ohio, in late October.
Dean and assistant coach Cindy Yonker lost only one player from the 2010-11 squad. That one player was Christine Chiricosta, the winningest individual in BGSU women's tennis history.
The Falcons concluded the '10-11 season with 15 wins, just one shy of matching the school record, and finished three spots higher than predicted in the MAC standings. BGSU finished the campaign with a dual-match record of 15-8 and a MAC ledger of 5-3. The Falcons, picked to place seventh in the MAC in the 2010-11 preseason coaches poll, actually finished fourth before advancing to the semifinal round of the MAC Championships.
In last year's BGSU Invitational, all seven Falcon players who participated won at least one flight championship. BG players combined to win five singles crowns and a pair of doubles championships in the 2010 event.
