No fewer than four of the seven players on head coach Penny Dean's roster went 3-0 in Friday action. Juniors Maddy Eccleston and Mary Hill and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland each won all of their matches on the day.
The other three team members -- senior Jessica Easdale and juniors Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson -- each went 2-1 on the first day of the season.
Eccleston's first win of the day moved her into the top 25 on the BGSU career wins list. One day into her junior season, she now has 89 career victories to rank 25th in school history.
Chiricosta won a pair of matches in straight sets at the top singles flight. After beating IUPUI's Shelby Hullett (6-2, 6-1), the sophomore downed Toledo's Kelsey Anonsen. Chiricosta downed Anonsen, 6-3, in the opening set, but trailed by a 5-0 count in the second set before rallying to take seven-straight games, the set and the match.
Hill, like Chiricosta, advanced to the semifinals of her flight. She downed Duquesne's Vanessa Steiner in straight sets, then outlasted IUPUI's Vanessa Whyte in a three-set match in second-flight action.
Eccleston captured both of her matches at the third flight in straight sets, defeating Xavier's Daniella Patton and Cleveland State's Catrine Bjerrehus.
Reuland swept Evansville's Gaby Fifer at the fourth flight, then rallied to win the final two sets after dropping the opening set to XU's Lizzie Oosterbaan.
Like her teammates at flights one through four, Grubb advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 day in singles. Grubb lost a total of only seven games in her four sets, downing DU's Alex Assaf and IPFW's Frederique Sunstrum in eighth-flight action.
Johnson defeated UT's Amanda Border in a hard-fought, three-set match at the seventh flight, but fell to Duquesne's Alrissa Tobe in two close sets.
Easdale dropped her opening match, but rebounded for a decisive victory over Jess Raatz of Evansville. Easdale lost just two total games in her back-draw match at the fifth flight.
All three of BGSU's doubles teams won on Friday. Chiricosta and Hill posted an 8-2 win at the top flight, while the Johnson/Eccleston duo won, 8-5, at flight number two. Reuland and Easdale did not drop a single game in their third-flight win over an Evansville tandem. Grubb, competing with a Duquesne player at the fourth flight, lost a narrow 8-6 decision.
The BGSU Invitational concludes on Saturday with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles at each flight. Team scores are not being kept, but individual champions will be crowned at each of the eight singles and four doubles flights.
