BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team seeks to build on momentum gained from their victory at the John Piper Intercollegiate when they travel this week to Louisville, Ky. for the 2011 Cardinal Intercollegiate.
The Falcons will be one of 18 teams competing in the 54-hole tournament. The event will be held on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 26-27) in Simpsonville, Ky. at the Cardinal Club Golf Course. Teams will play 36 holes on the par-72, 7,036 yard course on Monday and then conclude the tournament by playing 18 holes on Tuesday. Monday's play begins with a shotgun start.
Bowling Green will be joined in the field by fellow Mid-American Conference member Northern Illinois. Other schools in the field include Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Dayton, DePaul, Illinois State and Arkansas-Little Rock.
Drew Preston is the Falcons' top seed. He owns a team-leading 74.56 average through nine rounds and owns the team-low round (69) of the season to date.
Parker Hewit finished in a tie for 15th at this event last year, after shooting a team-best 217 (69-73-75). He is currently second on the team with a 74.67 average.
Third-seed Wes Gates was BGSU's top golfer at last week's John Piper Intercollegiate. His composite 220 earned a tie for fourth as the Falcons won the event for the third consecutive year.
Charlie Olson receives another chance to impress after a strong showing last week. Olson tied for ninth overall at the John Piper with a total of 222. He finished with rounds of 73 and 72.
Freshman Joe Cooper, who also played well at the John Piper, rounds out Bowling Green's team of five.
Last year at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, the Falcons finished eighth in a strong field of 16 teams. The team carded an 874 after rounds of 285, 291 and 298.
