With the win, the Rockets improve to 5-5-1 overall and 3-0-0 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 4-8-0 and 1-2-0, respectively.
MacLeod's goal came with 20:24 remaining in the second half. A UT long ball sailed toward the penalty area, where a Falcon defender got a head on it. The ball sailed high into the air, and a brief miscommunication along the BG back line was all MacLeod needed. When the ball came down, the UT sophomore got a boot on it, and was able to bloop the ball over BGSU goalkeeper Becca Ison and into the left side of the net.
That unassisted goal was enough for the Rockets to come away with the win. Toledo held advantages of 13-6 in shot attempts and 9-2 in shots on goal. With the wind at their backs in the second period, the Rockets fired nine shots to BG's one.
Vicki Traven made two saves to pick up the shutout win in goal for the visitors. For the Falcons, Ison's total of eight saves included several spectacular stops, with a highlight-reel save on MacLeod in each half.
After a men's soccer match that featured dark clouds, a slick field and a brief downpour, the Falcons and Rockets actually played under sunny skies for much of the match. The winds, however, were a constant at Cochrane Field all day long, averaging 20 miles per hour during the women's match.
The Falcons had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the opening minutes. With just under three minutes elapsed, BG senior captain Alyssa Zuccaro put junior Sarah VonderBrink through. VonderBrink fired a shot that went just wide right.
Midway through the period, sophomore Kaitlyn Tobin and Zuccaro teamed up to spring senior Megan Amann for a shot. 'Z's pass found Amann hustling into the box on the left side, but Traven was able to block the shot and keep the match scoreless.
With 14 minutes left in the period, freshman Kaylee Draper fired a ball from the left side of the pitch. The shot/cross went just over the fingertips of the leaping Traven, but also sailed just high of the far (right) post.
Just over a minute later, MacLeod got free for a hard, low shot. Ison, however, was more than equal to the task, making a one-handed save without giving up a rebound.
Only 25 seconds after Ison's save, sophomore Tracy Togba had a chance at the other end, but Traven deflected Togba's shot out of bounds.
The teams combined for only one more shot -- a Rachael Kravitz effort that was saved by Ison -- over the final 12-plus minutes of the period, and the teams went to the intermission locked in a scoreless draw.
The second half saw the Rockets fire four shots, including three on target, in the first 10 minutes, but Ison did not let a ball get past her. Also in that time, the redshirt junior made a diving effort to break up a cross by Kristen Lynn before MacLeod could get to it.
A moment later, Traven nearly made a costly mistake. The UT 'keeper dove to stop a seemingly harmless shot by a BGSU player. Instead of the ball rolling over the line for a Rocket goal kick, it bounced in the penalty area, but a Toledo defender was the first to reach it, and the visitors cleared the ball out of danger.
Sophomore Alyssa Carmack came up with a nifty defensive stop, knocking the ball away from Lynn in the penalty area with 36 minutes left. Only 30 seconds later, Lynn -- the Rockets' leading scorer -- got her head on a cross, nodding the ball just wide.
Then, with 34:43 left in the match, Ison made a spectacular stop. A through-ball near midfield put MacLeod in all alone, as she streaked in one-on-one against Ison. But, the BG 'keeper timed her challenge perfectly, going low to block MacLeod's shot and keep the match scoreless.
Five minutes later, Ison made another diving stop, getting her hands on a one-time effort by Megan Blake that seemed ticketed for the far post.
But, with 20:24 remaining, the visitors got on the board. And, Blair Sorg nearly doubled her team's lead with 14:43 on the clock, but she missed an open net after receiving a cross from Ashley Ross.
The Rockets, however, controlled the ball for the bulk of the half, playing keep-away from the Falcons for stretches before playing the take-the-ball-to-the-corner-flag game with the final minutes ticking away. UT prevented the Falcons from mounting any kind of an attack, and the visitors salted away the victory.
Traven, as mentioned, had two stops in her complete-match effort. MacLeod led all players with four shot attempts, putting all four of them on frame.
The Falcons continue a three-match homestand on Sunday, facing Ball State University. That match, scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., is the second half of a doubleheader at Cochrane Field, as the BGSU men's soccer team meets Florida Atlantic University in a noon start.
