Redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers had a double-double for the third time in as many MAC games, as the Falcons moved to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Rogers scored 15 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as BG won for the sixth consecutive game and the 13th time in the last 14 outings.
Freshman Jasmine Matthews had 10 points for the Brown and Orange. Tenishia Benson was the lone player in double digits for the Bobcats, with 13 points. Ohio is now 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.
Matthews and Rogers each played all 20 minutes in the second half, and helped the Falcons dial up the defensive intensity after halftime. BGSU held Ohio to just seven field goals and a 29.2 field-goal percentage in the second period.
Senior Jessica Slagle and redshirt junior Danielle Havel each had eight points and eight rebounds in the win, as the BGSU starters combined to score 59 of the Falcons' 61 points.
The Falcons held a 38-28 rebounding advantage, winning the battle of the boards for the 11th consecutive contest. BGSU had 24 rebounds to Ohio's 11 in the second half.
Leading by a 28-25 score at halftime, the Falcons scored the first six points of the second period to open up a nine-point lead. BGSU got stops on Ohio's first three possessions, and responded with layups each time. Slagle hit a runner in the lane, and Steffen converted a driving layup. When Rogers scored inside, the home team went up by a 34-25 score.
The Falcons still led by nine points after a Steffen jumper with 16:18 left in the game, but the visitors would score five-straight points, including a three-point field goal by Mariah Byard, to get within 37-33.
BG responded in kind, as Steffen scored five-straight points. She grabbed an offensive rebound and banked the ball off the glass and in, then took a pass from Slagle and hit a triple from in front of the BG bench, making the score 42-33 at the 14:08 mark.
The lead was still nine after a Slagle layup several minutes later, but back came the Bobcats. Symone Lyles' three-ball began a 7-2 run for the visitors, and when Benson hit a jumper, the Falcons' lead was just four points, at 46-42.
BG was called for an offensive foul on the next possession, giving the ball back to the 'Cats, and Falcon coach Curt Miller called a timeout. The Falcons forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, and the lead remained 46-42 heading into a media stoppage with 7:38 remaining. Out of that timeout, the home team took over.
BGSU scored the next 10 points, beginning a game-ending 15-7 run. Matthews started that 10-0 spurt, hitting a straightaway trey off of a Steffen feed. Havel fed Rogers for a layup, and Slagle knocked down a pair of free throws with 5:53 left, giving BG a double-digit lead for the first time all night.
Steffen capped the 10-0 run, curling around a screen, taking a pass from Matthews and hitting a three-pointer from the left elbow. BGSU's lead was 56-42.
Finally, with 3:30 remaining, Benson's layup snapped Ohio's string of scoreless possessions at nine. The points were the Bobcats' first in a span of nearly six minutes.
But, Matthews responded with another triple, as Steffen found the freshman for a shot from long range. When it fell through the hoop, BG's lead was 15 points, 59-44, with 3:04 remaining, and the Falcons were on their way to victory.
BGSU scored on three-straight possessions to begin the second half, after Ohio had done the same in the opening half. The 'Cats took a 6-2 lead by going 3-for-3 from the field to begin the night. Shavon Robinson scored on each of her team's first two trips down the floor, and an Ashley Fowler layup gave the visitors a four-point lead.
BG responded, as Steffen hit a layup and fed Rogers for a three-pointer and a 7-6 lead. The Falcons took a 15-9 lead after scoring six-straight points within a span of under a minute. Steffen knocked down another jumper, and the Brown and Orange would score on each of the next two possessions in transition.
First, Slagle corralled an Ohio miss and fired a long pass downcourt to Rogers for a layup. Then, Steffen stole the ball back, and Rogers hit Havel for another fast-break layup and a six-point lead.
The Bobcats scored six-straight points, tying the game on a Benson layup midway through the period, but the Falcons countered with hoops from Matthews and fellow freshman Logan Pastor.
Again, however, the Bobcats responded. The visitors scored five in a row, including Byard's triple that put her team ahead by a 20-19 count. Steffen's two free throws were answered by an Erin Bailes trey, and the 'Cats took a 23-21 lead into the final media timeout of the first half.
Matthews threw in a runner in the lane at the shot-clock buzzer, and sophomore Jill Stein then drove the lane and skipped a pass to an open Havel for a layup and a 25-23 lead with 2:20 left in the half.
Alesia Howard tied the score with a jumper, but a Rogers layup with 1:18 on the clock gave BGSU the lead for good. The redshirt soph split a pair of free throws to close the first-half scoring.
Both teams shot a similar percentage in the opening period, with BGSU going 12-of-28 (42.9%) from the floor, and Ohio hitting 10-of-24 shots (.41.7%). But, the Falcons allowed the Bobcats to shoot just 29.2% after halftime, while shooting 43.3% themselves.
BG forced 18 Ohio turnovers on the night, and the Brown and Orange had a 17-11 margin in points off turnovers. The hosts had a 38-14 advantage in points in the paint.
The Falcons now hit the road for the next two games, beginning with Sunday's (Jan. 15) contest at the University at Buffalo. Tipoff is 2:00 p.m. at UB's Alumni Arena.
