BGSU sophomore earns weekly conference honor for first time
Bowling Green State University tennis standout Nikki Chiricosta has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Thursday afternoon (Jan. 26). Chiricosta, a sophomore, earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio (Avon Lake H.S.), won at the both the top singles and the top doubles flight as the Falcons opened the dual-match portion of the schedule with a 5-2 win at Duquesne on Saturday (Jan. 21). In doubles, Chiricosta combined with junior Mary Hill for an 8-3 victory over the Dukes at the number-one flight.
Then, in singles play, the Falcon sophomore defeated DU's Megan O'Sullivan in straight sets, winning by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 at the top flight.
On the season, Chiricosta has an overall record of 21-8, having gone 10-4 in singles and 11-4 in doubles to date. After just a year and a half at BGSU, she has an outstanding overall mark of 74-27, including a singles record of 38-13 and a doubles ledger of 36-14.
Chiricosta and the Falcons take to the road again this weekend, heading to the Queen City for a Friday night (Jan. 27) match with Cincinnati. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
