BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's swimming team began their final weekend of regular season competition with a 177-115 demolition of Youngstown State on Friday evening (Jan. 27). The meet was held at the Cooper Natatorium, located in BGSU's Student Recreation Center.
The Falcons won 12 of the first 13 swimming event during the dual meet before conceding the final relay. Nine different swimmers won individual events, led by Vicky Yu and Amanda Rom, who each won twice.
Yu and Rom each swept their specialty events. Yu defeated the Penguins' Lauren Paz in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. In the 200-yard version, Yu defeated Paz by over six seconds, as she completed the swim in 2:07.68. Rom outpaced teammate Carmen Young in both breaststroke events by over one second each, as the Falcons took the top three spots in both events.
In addition to her butterfly swims, Yu competed in the 1000-yard freestyle for the first time in her BGSU career, and she placed second overall (10:52.68). Rom also competed a third time when she swam with Alexa Harris, Emily Waller and Emily Bennet on the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
In other individual events, Erica Nieminen earned a victory in the 500-yard freestyle by posting a personal record time of 5:10.13. She also set a personal-best time (1:00.95) in the 100-yard backstroke.
Other Falcon winners included Jen Beatty (200 freestyle; 1:55.54), Emily Bennet (100 backstroke; 0:59.12), Sarah Reinink (50 freestyle; 0:24.45), Brittany Szekely (100 freestyle; 0:53.90), Alexa Harris (200 backstroke; 2:08.77) and Katie Womack (400 IM; 4:44.12).
"We swam well this evening. It was great to see a lot of our swimmers do events they normally don't get to experience. The ladies approached their races with confidence and pushed hard through every event," head coach Petra Martin said. "We are still perfecting some small things, and this was another great opportunity to do so. We need to get some good rest tonight and be ready to race again tomorrow."
The Falcons will close out the 2011-12 regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Mid-American Conference rival Miami. The meet will once again be held at Cooper Natatorium. The team will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow, and the six members of the 2011-12 senior class will be honored beginning at 12:45 p.m., prior to the start of the meet.
