BGSU, now 3-0, faces UIC at the PTC Sunday
The Bowling Green State University tennis team opened the home portion of the dual-match season in style, sweeping the singles matches to close out a 7-0 victory over Chicago State University Saturday (Feb. 4). The match was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-0 in dual-match play. The Cougars drop to 1-4.
"We are pleased to open the home schedule on such a successful note," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "We worked this week in practice on keeping our focus, and I think we did a great job of that today."
BGSU captured each of the six singles matches in straight sets, with no Falcon losing more than five total games. Four of the six BG singles competitors lost two or fewer games.
In doubles play, the Cougars picked up one victory, but it wasn't enough to keep the Falcons from earning the doubles point and riding that momentum into singles play.
CSU's doubles win came at the top flight, as sisters Juan Rosalia Tejoprayitno and Juan Rosalina Tejoprayitno posted an 8-5 victory over junior Mary Hill and sophomore Nikki Chiricosta.
BGSU juniors Maddy Eccleston and Jade Johnson were victorious at flight number two, with an 8-3 win over Karyn Emeralda and Ruta Grinvalde. And, junior Katie Grubb and soph Emily Reuland blanked siblings Mia Townsell and Mysta Townsell, 8-0, at the third flight.
In singles action, Eccleston and Chiricosta won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores at the top two flights, with wins against the Tejoprayitno sisters. Eccleston played at the top singles flight in a dual match for the first time in her collegiate career.
Reuland dropped just five total games in her third-flight win over Emeralda, while Hill lost only four games in her victory over Grinvalde at the fourth flight.
"Emily's match was a very good one," said Dean. "There were a lot of exciting points, and the second set was closer than the score would indicate. She did a great job of closing it out."
At the bottom two flights, Grubb and Johnson each lost only one total game. Grubb downed Mysta Townsell, 6-0, 6-1, at the fifth flight. Johnson picked up a win over Mia Townsell at the sixth level, by the exact same score.
The Falcons return to the PTC on Sunday morning (Feb. 5), facing UIC. First serve is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
"We are pleased with this victory, and we know we need to be ready to go bright and early tomorrow morning as we face a very good UIC team," said Dean. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
