Jessica Slagle Named MAC Player of the Week
January 30, 2012 | Women's Basketball
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Jessica Slagle has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Jan. 30) afternoon. Slagle, a senior, earns the honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
Slagle's award marks the third consecutive week, and the fourth time in the last five weeks, that a BGSU player has been named the MAC P-O-W. Redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers was named on each of the previous two Mondays (Jan. 16 and Jan. 23), while junior Chrissy Steffen captured the honor on Jan. 2. Rogers also earned MAC weekly honors on Dec. 12, giving BG five total awards this season to date.
Slagle, a native of Sidney, Ohio, had arguably the best week of her collegiate career, leading the Falcons in scoring in both games as BGSU went 2-0 on the road last week. She averaged 20.5 points and also led the team in assists (4.5 apg) and steals (3.0 spg) in the Falcons' wins at Ball State and Central Michigan.
Slagle's career scoring best was 18 points entering the week, but she surpassed that total in each game. The senior captain had 22 points in a 63-52 win at Ball State Wednesday (Jan 25), adding four assists and a career-high five steals. She scored 13 points in the first half of that win, and keyed a 10-0 run late in the period that opened up a 17-point lead for the Falcons.
At CMU on Saturday (Jan. 28), Slagle scored 19 points in a 77-72 overtime victory, and dished out five assists. She hit a go-ahead layup with just 7.9 seconds remaining in regulation, putting the Falcons ahead by two points. After the Chippewas tied the contest to send it to overtime, Slagle converted another layup on the first possession of OT to give the Falcons a lead they would never relinquish, and then fed redshirt junior Danielle Havel for a three-point field goal and a five-point BG lead.
Slagle shot a team-best 57.1 percent from the field last week, making a career-high eight field goals in the BSU game and matching that total with eight more FGM vs. CMU.
On the season, Slagle is averaging 11.6 points, and also has 4.7 rebounds per contest. She leads the team in assists, with 2.3 per game, and is tied for second in steals (1.8 spg). In MAC games, Slagle is second on the team with 14.5 ppg, and she also has 5.6 rpg and team-best averages of 3.3 assists and 2.4 steals.
Slagle earns this week's MAC Player-of-the-Week honor for the East Division. Tavelyn James of Eastern Michigan was named the MAC P-O-W in the West.
Slagle and the Falcons are home for a pair of games this week, beginning with a Wednesday (Feb. 1) contest against Northern Illinois. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center. Then, the Brown and Orange will return to the Stroh for a Saturday (Feb. 4) game vs. Western Michigan, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
