BGSU Names Team Captains for 2012-13 Season
October 29, 2012 | Women's Basketball
Havel, Steffen and Stein to serve as tri-captains in first year of the Roos Era
“I am excited to announce our tri-captains for the 2012-13 season,” said Roos. “Danielle, Chrissy and Jill all have shown strong leadership skills throughout the preseason and during the beginning of our practices.
"Each of our three captains leads in a different way, yet they mesh well with one another. With eight new faces in our program, including coaches as well as players, I will be asking a lot of them throughout the season to help our program to be successful on and off the floor.”
Havel and Steffen, both natives of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.), are captains for the second consecutive year.
Havel started all 31 games for the Falcons last season, and averaged 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She was a co-recipient of BGSU's Impact-Player-of-the-Year Award, and also was an honorable-mention selection to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Havel led the Falcons in blocked shots (0.7), and ranked second on the team in rebounding, third in steals (1.6) and fifth in scoring. She had double-digit scoring totals in three of the final four regular-season games a year ago. A transfer from DePaul University, Havel enters her fourth year at BGSU overall, and her third season on the Falcons' active roster.
Steffen was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team a year ago, and also was named to the Academic All-MAC Team. She started every game for the Falcons for the second consecutive year, and led the team in scoring, with 13.2 points per game. Steffen, who shared the Falcons' Impact-Player-of-the-Year Award with Havel in 2011-12, also had 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She tied for the team lead in steals, and was second in assists and third in rebounding. Steffen paced the Falcons with 22 double-digit scoring games, including a BG-best six games of 20 points or more, and hit a team-leading 53 three-point field goals on the year. She enters her senior season with a total of 853 points at BGSU.
Stein, a native of Clyde, Ohio (Tiffin Columbian H.S.), played in 30 of the Falcons' 31 games off the bench last season, averaging 11.3 minutes, 2.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. Like her fellow tri-captains, she was named to the Academic All-MAC Team, earning honorable mention. Stein had a career-high 10 points in the Falcons' win over Western Kentucky, going 5-of-6 from the field in the victory at the Stroh Center. She has played in a total of 56 games over her first two years as a Falcon.
In the three years since Havel and Steffen arrived on campus, the Falcons have an overall record of 79-19, including a MAC ledger of 41-7. BGSU has won MAC East Division titles in each of those three seasons, including outright league regular-season crowns in both 2010 and 2012, and the Falcons have advanced to national postseason play every year, with NCAA Championships appearances in 2010 and '11 and a WNIT berth last March. The Falcons are a combined 52-12, including a MAC mark of 27-5, since Stein ventured to BG.
The Brown and Orange went 24-7 last year, winning a MAC division title for the eighth-straight season. BGSU has advanced to national postseason play in each of those eight seasons, including five NCAA Championships appearances in that time.
