Scouting the Offense
Quarterback Matt Schilz will be making his 29th start of his career this weekend versus Miami. Schilz, a junior, threw for over 3,000 yards last season and 28 touchdowns, all career-bests, and has thrown for 6,498 yards and 41 touchdowns in his career. He leads an offense that ranks 11th in the MAC in scoring (20.3) and total offense (387.8)
It's hard to say who Schilz's top target is this year, with five different players recording double digit receptions this season. Shaun Joplin (24 rec., 353 yards), Chris Gallon (23 rec., 244 yards), Ryan Burbrink (21 rec., 156 yards) and Alex Bayer (20 rec., 263 yards) lead the way.
At running back the Falcons will depend on Anthon Samuel. Samuel, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, has already surpassed 1,300 yard in his career and has eight 100-yard games in his first 15 contests. Last week at Akron the Falcons ran for 292 yards in the game. Samuel led the way with 115 yards, but John Pettigrew (81 yards) and Jamel Martin (79 yards) chipped in as well.
Scouting the Defense
The Falcons return 10 starters from the 2011 team and are led by senior defensive tackle Chris Jones. Jones has 20 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks on the year. Jones ranks ninth in the country in tackles for loss and fifth in sacks.
As a team, the Falcons rank first in the MAC in scoring defense (20.3) and total defense (343.0). Akron entered last weekend's contest averaging 38.6 points and 497.4 yards of offense, but the BGSU defense limited them to just 10 points and 316 yards of offense.
Scouting the Special Teams
Brian Schmiedebusch, a 2011 first-team all-conference punter a year ago, will once again handle all punting duties. The junior is averaging 41.5 yards per punt this season and has a 43.9 yard per punt career average.
The field goals and extra points have been a rough spot this season for the Orange and Brown. Through six games the Falcons have used two different kickers and are 2-for-7 on field goals and 14-for-16 on extra points.
Akron Recap
Bowling Green State dominated the second half, out-gaining Akron 322-36 and outscoring the Zips 24-0.
BGSU's rushing attack took over the game in the final 30 minutes, rushing for 226 yards, and finished the game with 292 yards on the ground. Leading the way was sophomore Anthon Samuel, who recorded a game-high 117 yards.
The BGSU defense was just as dominant in the second half, holding the Zips to 59 yards passing and minus-23 yards rushing. Akron came into the contest averaging 36.8 points and 497.4 yards per game.
Matt Schilz, who completed just 10-of-26 passes for 84 yards in the first half, threw the ball only seven times in the final 30 minutes, completing four of those passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
Running For The Win
Anthon Samuel, John Pettigrew and Jamel Martin ran all over Akron in the 24-10 win. Samuel finished the game with 117 yards (on 15 carries), John Pettigrew ran for a career-high 81 yards (on 13 carries) and Jamel Martin added 79 yards (11 carries). Joining Jones was Ted Ouellet, D.J. Lynch and Kendall Montgomery in the sack party versus the Zips. Jones, Ouellet and Lynch have each had several sacks throughout their careers, but Montgomery recorded his first. Montgomery, who is primarily BGSU's third tight end, saw action along the defensive line for just the second time in his career. Montgomery now has one career touchdown reception (versus Miami in 2011) and one career sack.
