Hill captured three singles victories at the sixth flight on the weekend, and earned a flight title when her Sunday opponent, Penn State's Sarah Handerson, was forced to retire. Hill led by a 5-2 score in the opening set when the match was halted.
"We had a good tournament overall," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "The tough competition here at Western Michigan was a great test for us. We had some success, and we also learned a few things about what we need to work on between now and the start of dual-match play.
"Mary Hill played some great tennis this weekend. She was in a groove, and did a great job. She played some of her best tennis of the fall, and was really playing well today."
Hill's run to the title included wins over players from Marquette, Notre Dame and PSU.
Two of Hill's teammates won the back draw of their respective singles flights. Freshman Drew Fillis defeated her opponent, from host WMU, in a third-set super tiebreaker at the eighth flight.
"Drew lost her first set today, and was down, 4-3, in the second set," said Dean. "But she stayed calm and took over the match with some amazing play. It was a great comeback win for her."
Fillis also had teamed with senior Jade Johnson to advance through the back draw in doubles, as that duo dropped their opening-round match at the third flight before bouncing back for a pair of victories.
Junior Nikki Chiricosta also advanced through the consolation bracket in singles. After a first-round loss at the number-one flight, she posted a pair of wins, including a straight-sets victory by identical 6-3 scores over an Iowa State opponent on Sunday.
Johnson posted a singles win in non-flighted action on Sunday, losing just two total games in a sweep of an ISU foe.
On the weekend, BGSU players had a combined record of 11-13 in singles, as well as a 5-7 doubles mark. The Falcons were a perfect 5-0 against Penn State, and BG had records of 4-2 against Iowa State and 3-1 against MAC rival WMU.
The WMU Super Challenge was the final invite on the Falcons' fall schedule. BGSU is now idle until the dual-match season begins with a match at Notre Dame in just over two months (Jan. 18, 2013).
