BGSU Athletics, SAAC Team Up For Falcons Fighting Hunger
November 08, 2012 | General
The BGSU Athletics Department, along with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), kicks off its month-long campaign to combat hunger in the local communities with its Falcons Fighting Hunger initiative this week. The goal of the program is not only to get the campus and local community involved, but also to educate the community on how severe the food shortage is in the Bowling Green area.
“August is traditionally the busiest month at the food pantry but in October we served over 370 people,” said Shirley Woessner, Director of the BG Christian Food Pantry. “There is always a need for items. If you are not in this situation you don't realize how bad the need is and how many people go to bed hungry at night. We strive on people helping people and our community is fantastic about coming together and helping out. “
Donation bins will be set up at the Sebo Athletic Center, and in the Office of Student-Athlete Services (University Hall room 206). The last day for donations will be Nov. 20. Anyone in and around the BGSU campus is encouraged to drop off items at the above sites anytime during business hours. Participants in the drive will receive a voucher for reduced ticket prices for the BGSU hockey game on Nov. 10 or the BGSU football game on Nov. 17.
All Bowling Green residents will have an opportunity to get involved with this worthwhile cause on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the BGSU ice hockey game against Western Michigan. Falcon athletes will be on hand 60 minutes before the match (6:00 pm) at all Ice Arena entrances to accept donations.
Also, on November 17th Student-athletes will be available at all entrances of Doyt Perry Stadium to accept donations 90 minutes prior to kick-off with Kent State (10:30am).
“BGSU's student-athletes appreciate all the support they receive from the community and this is just one of many examples of how they give back,” BGSU Athletics Director Greg Christopher said. “With the holidays just around the corner, the SAAC food drive will have a meaningful positive impact on dozens of families in Wood County. Last year, our student-athletes collectively served almost 1,500 hours with various not-for-profit agencies in Wood County. Whether it's the food drive or other service efforts, our student-athletes are truly making a difference in Bowling Green.
SAAC is a student-run organization comprised of representatives from each team. SAAC strives to promote personal, academic, career, and athletic development through a variety of programs and initiatives including the annual Falcons Fighting Hunger, collaboration with Special Olympics, Networking Night, and many other opportunities for student-athletes.
All items collected will be given to the BG Christian Food Pantry. Items in need include, but are not limited to: pasta and sauce; canned spaghetti; bottles and cans of juice; dry rice and beans; and peanut butter and jelly. Thank you in advance for your donation and for helping us make a big impact with this year's contribution.
