Fowler, Huth & Johnson earn league academic honor
Johnson earns the honor for the second time in her career, having also been named to the 2009 Academic All-MAC Team. Both Fowler and Huth were named to the team for the first time.
Additionally, eight Falcons earned Academic All-MAC honorable mention. That group included seniors Becca Ison, Emily Rothwell and Sarah VonderBrink, juniors Ivi Casagrande, Kaitlyn Tobin and Madeline Wideman, redshirt sophomore Kylie Briem and true soph Kaylee Draper.
Fowler, a native of Grove City, Ohio (Central Crossing), played in all 19 of BGSU's matches in 2012, making 17 starts. She played a total of 1,300 minutes on the year, primarily at a defensive midfielder spot. Fowler started the season opener, then came off the bench in the next match, playing 68 minutes on that day. She was back in the starting lineup for the next 15 matches, playing at least 60 minutes in 14 of those 15 games. Fowler has played in 57 career matches as a Falcon, making 45 starts over her first three playing seasons. A biology major, she maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.95 entering the fall 2012 semester.
Huth, who hails from Lebanon, Ohio (Lebanon), played in every match in the 2012 season, making three starts. She led the Falcons with three goals and seven points. Huth's first goal of the season came against Western Kentucky (Sept. 1), and she also found the net against Illinois State (Sept. 14) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 5). She picked up her first collegiate assist in the Falcons' MAC match at Eastern Michigan (Sept. 28). Through two years, Huth has played in 34 matches, and has career totals of five goals and 11 points. In the classroom, she entered the fall semester with a 3.85 cumulative GPA as a health science major.
Johnson, a fifth-year senior, is a native of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton Warrenville South). She played in all 19 matches in '12, starting 17. Johnson started the first 11 games of the year as well as the final six matches of the season. She played a total of 1,017 minutes in 2012 after missing all of the 2010 and part of the '11 season due to injury. Johnson was a recipient of the 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives Academic Excellence Award, given to student-athletes who graduate with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher. She played in a total of 66 matches in her career, making 57 starts as a Falcon. Johnson had a stellar cumulative GPA of 3.97 entering the fall.
A total of 41 student-athletes were named to the Academic All-MAC Women's Soccer Team. The number of honorees is the number that is set for that specific MAC sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
The Academic All-MAC Women's Soccer Team is the result of voting by the faculty athletics representatives at Mid-American Conference institutions. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. First-year transfers and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
