Ypsilanti, Mich. – Redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger set a personal best with a toss of 59-feet-8.25 in the weight throw to take first place as the Bowling Green indoor track and field team opened the season Friday evening at the Eagle Holiday Meet, hosted by Eastern Michigan.
Pleger, whose throw was better than any throw by a BGSU student-athlete a year ago, bettered her personal best by almost six feet. Backing her up, Nicolette Johnson finished third with a personal best toss of 50-8. Kayla Velasquez and Shana Flanary, both throwing for the first time in their collegiate careers, finished fourth and fifth with throws of 50-0 and 48-6.75 respectively.
“Brooke set a PR and had a pretty competitive mark, especially for December,” BGSU second-year track and field coach Lou Snelling said. “Really, that group as a whole threw pretty well.”
Beyond the weight throw, the Falcons got experience in a number of other events, seeing many of the younger members of the team competing for the first time. As a team, the Falcons finished in fourth place with 29 points, edging Oakland, which ended with 28.5. Eastern Michigan won the meet with 189.5 points.
Freshmen Demetra Taylor and Taylor Rambo combined with seniors Felicia Jefferson and Allison Weimer to place third in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:58.04. Taylor also played sixth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.19. Junior Allorian Horne ended seventh in the 200 with a time of 26.02.
“We would have hoped for a little bit better results overall,” Snelling said. “But we expect a lot of improvement as we go through the indoor season. We have a lot of work yet to do.”
Bowling Green will be off for more than a month before hosting the BGSU Opener Jan. 12. From there, the Falcons will compete almost weekly through the end of the indoor season.
