Falcons Host BGSU Opener Saturday

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green women's track and field team will host the BGSU Opener Saturday at Perry Field House. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and running events will begin at noon. Admission for the meet will be $3 for adults and $1 for non-BGSU students with an ID. BGSU students with ID and children 10 and under are admitted free. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.
THE COMPETITION
Bowling Green will host MAC schools Western Michigan (the defending BGSU Opener champion), Ball State and Toledo for the BGSU Opener as well as non-conference foes Dayton and IPFW. A year ago, Toledo placed second at the MAC Indoor Championships, while Western Michigan was third and Ball State was 12th. The Falcons finished 11th. Dayton placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championships and IPFW was ninth at the Summit League Championships.

LAST YEAR'S BGSU OPENER
BGSU placed third out of seven teams in the BGSU Opener a year ago, defeating Toledo, Ball State, Wright State and IPFW. Jeanette Pettigrew, who is redshirting this year, won the 60 and the 200 for the Falcons and BGSU won two other events as well. Western Michigan will look to defend its championship from a year ago.
LAST TIME OUT
Brooke Pleger set a personal best with a weight throw toss of 59-feet-8.25 as the BGSU track and field team opened the season Dec. 7 at the Eagle Holiday Meet, hosted by Eastern Michigan. Nicolette Johnson followed Pleger by placing third in the weight throw as the team placed fourth out of five teams, edging Oakland in the final team standings. The 1600 relay team also finished well, placing third with a time of 3:58.04.
INDIVIDUAL COMPETITORS
There are numerous individuals ranked among the top in the country competing in the BGSU Opener. Ball State's MaryKate Mellen ranks eighth in the country so far in the 5000 with a time of 17:41.84. Dayton's Hanna Krizmanic is 10th in the nation in the pole vault at 12-foot-7.5. BGSU's Brooke Pleger has the 19th best weight throw distance in the country so far this year with a toss of 59-8.25. Toledo's Kiah Douglas has posted the 27th best long jump in the country this year at 18- 9.25. IPFW's distance medley relay team ranks 10th nationally with a time of 13.18.81.
LONG BREAK
BGSU had more than a month off since competing in the season-opening Eagle Holiday Meet, hosted by Eastern Michigan University, on Dec. 7. The Falcons are scheduled to compete four more times during the indoor season before competing in the MAC Indoor Championships Feb. 22-23 at Eastern Michigan.
PERSONAL BESTS
In Bowling Green's season-opening meet, the Falcons set or tied 23 personal records at the Eagle Holiday Meet.
NEW FACES
Second-year head coach Lou Snelling announced the addition of two new assistant coach in October. James Gildon works primarily with the team's jump, sprint and hurdle groups, while McKayla Plank assists with both the cross country and track and field programs. Gildon comes to BGSU after serving as an assistant coach at Fort Hayes State University, while Plank was a standout distance runner at Georgia.

PLEGER HITS MAC AUTOMATIC MARK
With her toss of 59-feet-8.25 in the weight throw at the Eagle Holiday Meet, redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger hit the automatic qualifying mark for the Indoor MAC Championship. Eastern Michigan will host the meet Feb. 22-23.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
The BGSU track and field team has been named a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for each of the past six years. The Falcons had a 3.24 combined grade point average to earn the award in 2012, fifth-best among MAC schools.
