Falcons Drop Heartbreaker to MSU, 4-3
February 10, 2012 | Women's Tennis
The Bowling Green State University tennis team just missed knocking off a Big Ten Conference team on the road, falling to Michigan State University by a 4-3 final on Friday afternoon (Feb. 10). The non-conference dual match was held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-1 on the young season. The Falcons drop to 3-2.
"This was a very tight match, and it easily could have gone either way," said BGSU coach Penny Dean. "We battled them very hard, and while we are disappointed that we did not come away with the win, we are pleased with the effort and the intensity we showed today. This experience will help us down the road."
MSU took the first point of the day, winning two of the three doubles matches to capture an early 1-0 lead. In singles play, four of the six contests were extended to three sets, with three of those four matches coming right down to the wire.
Both BGSU and MSU won one singles match in straight sets, and both the Falcons and Spartans picked up two victories in the three-set battles. Each of MSU's two third-set decisions came by a narrow 7-5 count.
In doubles play, the Falcons got a win at the second flight, as sophomore Nikki Chiricosta teamed up with junior Mary Hill for an 8-5 win over MSU's Olga Chernova and Kat Lingl. The Chiricosta/Hill duo improves to 9-4 this season and 26-9 since the start of last year.
The Spartans, however, picked up wins at each of the other two doubles flights. In top-flight action, Nicole Herzog and Michaela Silesova downed juniors Maddy Eccleston and Jade Johnson by an 8-4 count. The Eccleston/Johnson tandem, now 9-4 on the season, was playing at the number-one flight for the first time.
At the third flight, MSU's Dana Guentert and Julianne Gruber teamed up to give MSU an 8-5 victory over junior Katie Grubb and sophomore Emily Reuland. The loss was just the third for Grubb and Reuland in 11 matches as a team this season to date.
Singles play saw Chiricosta post a lopsided win at the top flight. After picking up a 6-4 victory over Herzog in the opening set, the Falcon soph breezed to a 6-0 win in the second set to close out her match.
MSU's Lingl picked up a win over Grubb by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 at the fifth flight, but Eccleston rallied back from the first-set loss to capture her match. The BG co-captain, after losing a 7-5 set to Chernova at the second flight, roared back to win two consecutive sets by 6-1 scores.
Each of the other three singles matches came right down to the wire. With the overall match score tied, 2-2, the Falcons needed to win two of the last three singles contests to pull off the road win. But, the Spartans eked out the win by the slimmest of margins.
Hill picked up a win for the Falcons at the fourth flight, with a 6-4 triumph over Silesova in the third set of that match. Hill posted the come-from-behind win after losing her opening set, 7-5.
But, MSU got 7-5 third-set victories by Marina Bohrer at the third flight and Gruber at the sixth. Bohrer defeated Reuland in the opening set, before the Falcon soph responded with a dominant 6-1 second-set victory. Johnson posted a 6-2 win over Gruber in the opening set, but Gruber was able to bounce back to capture the next two sets and the win.
The Falcons now will return to Northwest Ohio to prepare for next weekend's match vs. the University of Louisville. BGSU will meet the Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 18, in a 5:00 p.m. start at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
