BGSU battles the Cardinals in 5:00 p.m. start at the PTC
The Bowling Green State University tennis team, after suffering a narrow road loss to a Big Ten Conference team, returns home to face a Big East Conference program this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean host the University of Louisville on Saturday evening (Feb. 18), with first serve set for 5:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
BGSU STATS & MATCH-BY-MATCH RESULTS
The Falcons are 3-2 in dual-match play this season, but BG is looking to snap a two-match losing streak after a 3-0 start. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange fell, 4-3, at Michigan State. After the Spartans captured the doubles point, four of the six singles matches were extended to three sets, with three of those coming right down to the wire.
When all was said and done, both the Falcons and Spartans had picked up three singles victories, including two wins apiece in the three-set matches. Each of MSU's two third-set decisions came by a narrow 7-5 count.
BGSU's wins this season to date have come over Duquesne, Cincinnati and Chicago State, while the team's other loss was against UIC. The Falcons have split the first two matches at the PTC, having faced CSU and UIC on back-to-back days (Feb. 4-5) at the venue.
Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta and junior Maddy Eccleston each won in singles play at MSU last weekend. Chiricosta lost only four games in her top-flight victory, and also teamed up with junior Mary Hill for a doubles win vs. the Spartans.
Eccleston and Hill both lost narrow 7-5 decisions in the opening singles set vs. State, before rallying for three-set wins. Eccleston's victory came at the second flight, while Hill was a winner at flight number four.
BGSU's other singles competitors included sophomore Emily Reuland at the third flight, and juniors Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson at flights five and six, respectively. Reuland and Johnson lost three-set matches vs. the Spartans.
The Chiricosta/Hill team picked up a doubles victory at the second flight against MSU, while Eccleston and Johnson competed together at the top flight for the first time in their respective collegiate careers. The Grubb/Reuland team represented the Falcons at the third flight.
The Falcons' seven players -- the aforementioned six student-athletes and senior Jessica Easdale -- have combined for a winning percentage of 71.8 percent in singles play to date, having gone 84-33 this year. BGSU is 20-10 in singles in the dual matches heading into the Louisville match.
In doubles, BG competitors are 41-17 (70.7%) this season, including a 9-6 mark in the five dual matches.
All seven Falcons have won at least 65.5% of their matches this season, with five of those seven boasting a winning percentage of better than 70%. Reuland leads the way with 29 overall wins and a 76.3% success rate, while Eccleston is 28-10 and Hill 27-12.
Chiricosta has gone 26-11 so far this year, while Grubb is 23-9 on the season.
Louisville will take a 3-3 record into a Friday (Feb. 17) afternoon match at Akron. The Cardinals are 3-1 at home this season and 0-2 away from the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Louisville has posted dual-match victories over Morehead State, Austin Peay and Furman, while falling to Arkansas, Stephen F. Austin and Purdue. The team's lone match last weekend was a Saturday (Feb. 11) victory over Furman, 7-0. Last year, coach Mark Beckham's team finished with a dual-match record of 11-13.
Louisville holds a 2-0 lead over the Falcons in the all-time series between the teams. Saturday's meeting marks the teams' third in as many seasons, but the first in Northwest Ohio. Two years ago, the Cardinals posted a 5-2 home win over the Brown and Orange (Jan. 16, 2010). U of L picked up a 7-0 victory a year ago at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, in the Falcons' dual-match opener (Jan. 21, 2011).
Following the Louisville match, the Falcons will play three consecutive matches away from home, beginning with a dual at Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 25. That contest is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
