Falcons Vanquished By Ohio In Final Round of MAC Match Play

DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team concluded the inaugural Mid-American Conference Match Play tournament with a 5-1 loss to Ohio University on Tuesday (Feb. 14). The tournament was hosted by Ball State and held in Dade City, Fla. at the Lake Jovita Golf Course.
The third-round loss gave the Falcons an eighth-place finish in the event. Bowling Green entered the tournament seeded sixth, based on results from the team's fall schedule.
Parker Hewit earned Bowling Green's only win among the six individual matches, as he defeated Ohio's Byron Firestone, 2-and-1. Hewit finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
Wes Gates and Chris Melvin each dropped to 1-2 for the tournament by falling to Brad Lucas and John Mlynarski, respectively. Gates lost his match 1-up, while Melvin dropped his 3-and-2.
Charlie Olson (versus Paul Grauer) and Drew Preston (versus Michael Lamping) each lost 4-and-3, while freshman Joe Cooper was downed 4-and-2 by Connor Coldwater.
The day began with Olson completing his second-round match against Akron's Ryan Mason. The pair's match was all-square through 17 holes, all played on Monday. Mason won the final hole on Tuesday to earn a 1-up victory and give Akron a 4-2 match win.
Tournament host Ball State won the event by defeating Eastern Michigan, 3.5-2.5, in the third round's championship match.

BGSU resumes its spring schedule in one month, when the team travels to Pauma Valley, Calif. for the Triumph at Pauma Valley tournament, which takes place from March 12-13.
