March 25, 2012 | Men's Golf
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will compete in its second stroke-play tournament of the spring on Monday and Tuesday (March 26-27) when it travels to Little Rock, Ark. for the 19th annual UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
A field of 17 teams will play 54 holes over two days at Little Rock's Chenal Country Club. Monday's play will feature two rounds and 36 holes, and the teams will wrap up play with a single 18-hole round on Tuesday. Both days begin with 8:00 a.m. shotgun starts.
In the field of 17, Bowling Green will be joined by Eastern Michigan from the Mid-American Conference. Three other teams -- Columbia, Illinois State and Weber State -- are from outside of the Southeast. The remaining 11 teams are Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Belmont, Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri State, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin and Western Kentucky.
Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana are both ranked in the top 100 of Golfstat.com's most recent rankings.
The Falcons most recently tied for fourth at the Triumph at Pauma Valley Invitational, as they posted a 54-hole total of 900 (300-296-304). The score keeps the team's per-round average at 300, and the finish is BGSU's second-best of the season.
Parker Hewit tied for seventh by shooting a 222 during the tournament. Wes Gates and Charlie Olson both also finished in the top 20. Gates tied for 15th after carding a 226, while Olson's total of 228 earned a tie for 20th place.
Hewit's effort gives him the team lead in scoring average (74.76) and places him in a tie with Olson for most top-ten finishes this season (two). Olson's top-20 finish was his fifth of the season, which is also a team-best. He's finished outside of the top 20 only once in six stroke-play events.
Following their trip to Arkansas, the Falcons will travel to State College, Pa. for the Rutherford Intercollegiate, which takes place on April 7th and 8th.
