Nashville, Tenn. - The Bowling Green State University Falcons were defeated by the Kansas Jayhawks, 3-1, in the season opener on Saturday morning. Wes Benjamin got the win for the Jayhawks, while sophomore Ben Singer was tagged with the loss.
The game was tied at one through the top of the seventh when the Jayhawks' Tucker Tharp singled home two runs, which would prove to be the winning runs. The Falcons fall to 0-1 on the season with the loss. The Jayhawks improve to 2-0 on the year with the win.
The Falcons would get on the board first, when T.J. Losby knocked home the Falcons only run of the game. Redshirt senior Tyler Wynn scored on the play, after he was walked by Jayhawks hurler Wes Benjamin.
With the game tied at one, the Falcons seemed to get things going at the dish. A leadoff single by Andrew Kubuski was followed by a lined shot to third by Losby. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Losby's line drive caromed off of third baseman Zac Elgie's head, and was caught by shortstop Kevin Kuntz for the putout. The next batter would line out to Elgie at third, and Kubuski was doubled off first base.
Cody Apthorpe went five innings for the Falcons, only allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four, but his five base-on-balls did not help his pitch count. Ben Singer followed Apthorpe, going two innings, and allowing two runs. He was tagged with the loss. Junior captain Nick Bruns pitched a scoreless eighth for BGSU. Freshman Wes Benjamin went seven strong innings for the Jayhawks, picking up the win.
The Falcons will be in action later today when they play the Saint Louis Billikens at Middle Tennessee State University, with first pitch expected around 4 pm.
