DAY THREE -- LIVE STATS LIVE VIDEO
AKRON, Ohio -- Alexis Kain led the Bowling Green State University effort by winning a silver medal and breaking her own BGSU record on the second day of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The University of Akron is hosting the three day meet at the Ocasek Natatorium.
Kain qualified for the championship final in the 100-yard breaststroke with a third-place preliminary time of 1:02.19, which represented a season-best. She became one of two Falcons to qualify for championship heats thus far at the MAC meet.
In the championship race, Kain broke the BGSU record for the event and posted a career-best MAC Championships finish by placing second in 1:01.61. She set both previous standards (1:02.03; fourth place) at the 2011 MAC Championships.
Kain will have the opportunity to replicate the feat on Saturday (Feb. 25) in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Emily Waller was BGSU's second swimmer to compete in a championship heat on Friday. She qualified for the finals in the 200-yard freestyle with a career-record 1:50.56, then set the bar even higher by finishing the final in 1:50.31 for sixth place. Waller now ranks second in BGSU history, just one second away from the school record.
Four BGSU swimmers competed in consolation heats and earned points for the Falcons. Amanda Rom tied for tenth with a time of 1:03.90 in the 100 breaststroke, while Erica Nieminen placed 11th by posting a career-best mark (1:51.29) in the 200 freestyle.
Jen Beatty (1:52.11) placed 16th, also in the 200 freestyle, and Brittany Szekely (0:56.86) matched that finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
Overall, the Falcons set 13 individual career records and five season-best times during Friday's competition.
Bowling Green also competed in two relays on Friday evening. The team finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.08). The mark, set by Kain, Szekely, Emily Bennet and Sarah Reinink, met the NCAA's "B" qualifying standard.
BGSU's 800-yard freestyle relay team finished eighth overall with a time of 7:28.59.
The Falcons reside in eighth place as a team with 179 points after day two of the three-day competition. They trail Akron by 23 points and Ball State by 40. Toledo leads the meet with 395 points, while Ohio trails the Rockets by 11 points.
The final day of competition begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with preliminary heats in the 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke. The evening session includes the finals of those events, as well as the finals in the 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.
