Visiting UIC knocked the Bowling Green State University tennis team from the ranks of the unbeaten, handing the Falcons a 5-2 setback Sunday morning (Feb. 5) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Flames improve to 2-2 in dual-match play. The Falcons are now 3-1 on the year.
"We are disappointed to lose today, but UIC is a very strong team year-in and year-out," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "We just need to keep improving, and we will use this match as a building block. We will learn from today's match and it will make us better as we continue through the season."
The Flames captured the doubles point, winning at each of the top-two flights. BGSU got a win at the third flight, as junior Katie Grubb and sophomore Emily Reuland teamed up for an 8-3 victory over UIC's Jana Knoppe and Linda Hricistova.
Reuland's winning ways continued in singles play, as she swept Elisa Simonetti in third-flight action, losing just three total games. Reuland closed out her victory with a 6-0 decision in the second set.
Reuland is now a perfect 4-0 in dual-match play, with all four matches coming at the third flight. She has a team-best 15-3 singles record this season to date.
In addition to Reuland, fellow soph Nikki Chiricosta also won her Sunday singles match in lopsided fashion. Chiricosta swept Teona Tsertsvadze at the second flight, winning a 6-0 first set and dropping just two games in the second set.
But, the Flames captured each of the other four singles matches, as Mariya Kovaleva downed junior Maddy Eccleston in two narrow sets at the top flight. UIC also won at the bottom three flights, with Knoppe, Kathryn Sharples and Hricistova picked up wins.
Hricistova's victory came by a very narrow margin at the sixth flight, as she split her first two sets against Falcon senior Jessica Easdale before winning a 10-7 tiebreaker.
The Falcons now prepare for a Friday (Feb. 10) match at Michigan State University. BGSU's next home match will come on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the University of Louisville comes to the PTC.
