The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, and is the first half of a doubleheader for the Spartans. Following the BGSU match, Michigan State will face the University of Toledo at approximately 5:00 p.m.
Both the Falcons and the Spartans are 3-1 on the season. BGSU got off to a 3-0 start, with wins over Duquesne, Cincinnati and Chicago State. The latter win came Saturday (Feb. 4) by a 7-0 count at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. On Sunday morning (Feb. 5), however, UIC came to the PTC and dealt the Falcons a 5-2 defeat.
The Falcons' seven players have combined for a winning percentage of 72.7% in both singles and doubles play to date. BGSU has gone 80-30 in singles action so far this season, including a 17-7 ledger in the four dual matches.
In doubles play, BG competitors are 40-15 overall, and Falcon teams have compiled a record of 8-4 in dual-match play.
Junior co-captain Maddy Eccleston and sophomore Nikki Chiricosta each have played two dual matches at the number-one flight this 'spring', and both have gone 1-1. Eccleston played at the top flight in both of last weekend's matches, while Chiricosta went 2-0 at flight number two vs. Chicago State and UIC. Chiricosta lost a total of just four games during her four singles sets last weekend.
Sophomore Emily Reuland is a perfect 4-0 at the third flight since the start of the dual-match schedule. Reuland, who has a team-leading 15-3 singles record this year, has won five consecutive singles matches, and has captured seven-straight matches overall (singles and doubles) since losing her doubles contest vs. Duquesne in the dual-match opener.
Junior Mary Hill has played all four matches at the fourth singles flight, winning three. Hill's total of 13 singles wins this year trails only Reuland and Eccleston (14).
Another junior, Katie Grubb, has been in Dean's lineup for all four dual matches, playing at the fifth singles flight in three. Grubb, at 11-3, already has topped her singles win total for all of last season.
Senior co-captain Jessica Easdale has played in three of the four dual matches, going 2-1 overall. Easdale won her lone match at the fifth flight and split a pair of contests at the sixth level. Grubb and fellow junior Jade Johnson each are 1-0 in sixth-flight action since the start of dual-match play.
In doubles, Dean's lineup has remained the same through the first three weekends of the spring schedule. Chiricosta and Hill have split their four matches at the top flight, with BG's second- and third-flight teams each having gone 3-1 to date. Eccleston and Johnson have played at the second flight, and are 9-3 overall this season and 10-3 as a team since arriving at BGSU.
The Eccleston/Johnson duo lost against UIC on Sunday, snapping a six-match winning streak dating back to November.
At the third flight, Grubb and Reuland have combined to post a 3-1 record since Christmas, an 8-2 overall record in 2011-12 and a 11-3 mark since Reuland came to campus in the fall of 2010. That duo's lone loss of the dual-match season came in a tiebreaker at Duquesne.
Michigan State is coming off a 5-2 home win over Cleveland State last weekend. Head coach Simone Jardim's team has wins over Oakland and Eastern Michigan, with the lone loss coming to Akron.
The Falcons and Spartans crossed paths this fall, as BGSU ventured to East Lansing to take part in the Green and White Invite on Nov. 4-6. BG enjoyed some success that weekend, as Falcon competitors combined to go 5-2 vs. the Spartans in singles play and 2-0 in doubles action.
In dual matches, it is the Spartans who have had the upper hand. MSU leads BGSU, 15-1, in the all-time series between the teams. The Spartans have won 10-straight meetings since BG's lone series win, in the 1999-2000 season. The Falcons and MSU have met in East Lansing in 12 of the last 13 seasons, and all but one of the 16 total series meetings have been at MSU. The teams have not met in Ohio since the 1985-86 campaign. Last year, MSU picked up a 7-0 win (Feb. 4, 2011).
Following Friday's match, the Falcons will return to Northwest Ohio to prepare for a match against the University of Louisville on Saturday, Feb. 18.
