CAREER STATS OF 2011-12 FALCONS
QUICK HITS
• The Falcons are coming off a 67-56 win over Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) at the Stroh Center ... redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers had her sixth double-double of the season, and her fifth in MAC play, with 22 points and 13 rebounds vs. the Broncos.
• The WMU game marked head coach Curt Miller's return to the sidelines after a two-game absence ... Miller missed the Central Michigan (Jan. 28) and Northern Illinois (Feb. 1) games after it was determined that he had suffered a mild stroke during the Falcons' win over Eastern Michigan (Jan. 22) ... Miller made the trip to Ball State and coached the team in the Jan. 25 game vs. the Cardinals, before it was determined by doctors the following day that he had suffered the stroke.
• Associate head coach Jennifer Roos served as acting head coach for the two games that Miller missed, the wins at Central Michigan and at home against Northern Illinois ... as confirmed by the NCAA Office, Miller gets credit for those wins on his overall coaching record.
• The Falcons are off to a 10-0 start in MAC play ... the 2011-12 campaign marks the fourth time in the last seven years that BG has begun conference action with at least 10-straight victories ... BGSU went a perfect 16-0 in MAC play in 2005-06, and the Falcons won the first 14 league contests in both 2006-07 and '08-09.
• BGSU is looking to extend a number of impressive winning streaks ... the Falcons have won 13 consecutive games, including, as mentioned above, all 10 MAC games this season to date ... BG's streak against the MAC is much longer than 10 games (more about that in a moment) ... but, the Brown and Orange lost the last time the team faced Toledo.
• In fact, the Rockets have won the last two regular-season meetings in the 'Battle of I-75' ... Toledo picked up a 66-63 win in the Falcons' last trip to Savage Arena, before a crowd of over 5,800 two years ago (Jan. 30, 2010) ... that win snapped a 12-game BGSU series winning streak ... BG won the rematch, with a 62-53 triumph in the championship game of the MAC Tournament (March 13, 2010) ... but, the Rockets escaped Anderson Arena with a 66-65 win over the Falcons in last season's lone meeting (Jan. 26, 2011).
• BGSU has won 18 consecutive MAC regular-season games, and the Falcons have captured 21-straight games against conference foes, including regular-season and tournament contests ... BG won the first three MAC games last season, lost three of the next five matches, then won eight-straight games to end the regular season, following that up with three more victories in downtown Cleveland en route to the MAC Tournament title.
• Western Michigan is the last MAC team to defeat the Falcons, over a year ago ... the Broncos, trailing by a 37-24 halftime score, came roaring back to post a 66-55 win in Kalamazoo (Jan. 29, 2011) ... WMU was the only team to defeat BG by more than one point in the 2010-11 regular season.
• BG, after beginning the season with a pair of losses, has won 20 of the last 21 games ... the Falcons reeled off a seven-game win streak, suffered a two-point loss at Creighton (Dec. 18), and have won 13 consecutive contests since that setback.
• The Falcons' current win streak is BGSU's seventh of 10 games or more since the beginning of the 2005-06 season ... the other MAC teams have combined for three such streaks in during that time ... Ball State had two of those double-digit win streaks ... Miami had the third, with a 10-game streak that was snapped by the Falcons on Jan. 19.
• Overall, the current streak is the Falcons' 11th double-digit win streak in school history ... the complete list can be found later in these notes.
• The Falcons' win over WMU on Saturday was the team's 20th victory of the season ... BGSU has won 20 or more games 17 times, the highest total of any MAC program ... and, the Falcons now have won at least 20 games in each of the last nine seasons, extending the program's MAC record for consecutive seasons of such sustained success.
• Under the new MAC Tournament format, the top-four seeds will receive multiple byes in 2012 ... the third and fourth seeds will earn berths in the quarterfinals, with seeds one and two being placed directly into the semifinal round ... put another way, a team seeded first or second will need to win only two MAC Tournament games to capture the title, while the third or fourth seed would need three wins ... any team seeded fifth through 12th will need to reel off five consecutive wins to capture the tourney crown.
• Currently, BGSU sits atop the MAC at 10-0 ... Eastern Michigan and Toledo are two games back with 8-2 records, while Miami is 7-3 ... four teams – Akron, Central Michigan, Kent State and Northern Illinois – are tied for the fifth overall spot, with 4-6 records ... long story short, BGSU is six games ahead of the fifth-place teams with six games to play, and the Falcons, obviously, currently hold the tiebreaker with each of those four teams (BG has one more game against both UA and KSU).
• Miller, the second-winningest coach in MAC history, is performing one of top coaching jobs in his 11 seasons at BGSU this winter ... he and his staff have orchestrated this season's success with a very youthful squad ... nine players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores ... the Falcons lost six players, including four starters, from a year ago ... that group of graduates combined for nearly 5,500 points, 2,400 rebounds and 1,000 assists in their BGSU careers.
• The Falcons returned nine letterwinners – but just one starter – from last year's 28-5 MAC Championship team ... junior Chrissy Steffen, the lone returning starter, was chosen to the Preseason All-MAC Team ... not only is Steffen the lone returning starter, she was the only player on the BGSU roster to have started even one collegiate game prior to the 2011-12 season opener at Dayton.
• Rogers and Steffen each have started all 23 games this season to date, and redshirt junior Danielle Havel and senior Jessica Slagle have started every game as well ... sophomore Jillian Halfhill joined that quartet in the starting lineup for the first 10 games of the year, and freshman Jasmine Matthews has started each of the last 13 contests, including every MAC game.
• BGSU is the winningest team in MAC history, and early this conference season, the Falcons became the first league women's hoops program to post 350 league victories ... BG is now 358-145 in MAC regular-season games, for a winning percentage of 71.2% – the most wins and highest percentage of any conference team.
• The 2011-12 campaign marks the third season in a row that the Falcons have had two win streaks of at least seven games ... last season, BG had a 15-game win streak as well as an 11-game streak ... two years ago, the Falcons had a pair of eight-game streaks ... BGSU had only one such streak in 2008-09 ... but, that streak lasted a school-record 25 games from late November into early March.
• Bowling Green is one of 17 NCAA Division-I women's basketball teams still undefeated in conference play ... additionally, the Falcons are one of just 17 teams to reach the 20-win plateau.
• Next month, the Stroh Center will host the first and second rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship ... the first-round games are set for Sunday, March 18, with the second-round contest scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 ... for much more information, or to order tickets, log on to the web at BGSUFalcons.com.
