With the win, the Rockets improve to 16-7 overall and 9-2 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 20-4 and 11-1, respectively.
BGSU's loss snapped winning streaks of 18 MAC regular-season games and 21 overall contests against conference opponents. The Falcons' last loss to a MAC school came at Western Michigan on Jan. 29, 2011.
Toledo has won the last two meetings, and the Rockets have captured each of the last three regular-season matchups. That comes after the Falcons had won 12 consecutive games over the Blue and Gold.
UT has won back-to-back games against the Falcons for the first time since the Rockets captured three-straight series wins from March of 2001 to January, 2003. That streak included the last game of the Dee Knoblauch Era as well as the Falcons' first two meetings with their arch-rivals under head coach Curt Miller.
After spotting the Rockets a 2-0 lead, the Falcons did not trail again until Toledo senior Courtney Ingersoll hit a three-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the second half. Ingersoll, UT's second-leading scorer on the year, had been held without a point prior to that shot. The three-ball gave the Rockets a 51-50 lead.
Following that basket and a BG timeout, the Falcons missed a shot at the other end, and the ball went out of bounds to the Rockets with 46.9 seconds left. On UT's next possession, Haylie Linn missed a three-point try, but Ingersoll came up with the offensive rebound and was fouled with 26.5 seconds remaining. The senior split her two free-throw tries for a two-point lead.
On the next possession, BGSU could not get a good look at the basket, and the Falcons' Chrissy Steffen was forced to fire a long, contested shot in the final seconds. That shot was off the mark, and the Rockets had the victory.
Steffen led all scorers with 20 points on the day, while redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers had 17 for the Falcons.
Andola Dortch had 16 points to lead three UT players in double digits. Dortch scored the first four points of UT's game-ending 8-0 run. Yolanda Richardson and Inma Zanoguera each added 10 points for the hosts.
The Rockets shot an even 40 percent for the game, including a 13-of-27 clip (48.1%) after halftime. BG shot just 23.1% in the second half and 33.3% for the game.
The game started slowly, as both teams failed to score on their first two possessions, before Dortch hit a jumper 90 seconds into the contest. Steffen, however, responded with a three-pointer out top, starting an 11-0 run for the Falcons.
That run continued with a driving layup by senior Jessica Slagle, and Slagle then proceeded to steal the ball and lay it off for a transition three by Steffen, giving the Brown and Orange an 8-2 advantage at the 16:20 mark.
Steffen continued her hot shooting, knocking down her third triple of the game with 14:25 left before halftime. That shot gave the home team an 11-2 advantage.
The Rockets scored five of the next seven points, with the Falcons getting only a pair of Danielle Havel free throws during that span, before Slagle's driving 'and-one' layup gave the visitors a 15-7 lead heading into the day's second media timeout. She hit the ensuing throw out of that break, for a nine-point margin.
For the game, the Falcons were a perfect 12-of-12 from the tree-throw line. BGSU entered the game shooting just 66.4 percent from the stripe this season.
Rogers muscled inside for a short one-hander and an 18-7 lead midway through the period. Zanoguera converted a layup, but Steffen's fourth three-pointer of the game gave the Falcons a 21-9 edge with just under nine minutes left before halftime.
A nifty putback by Rogers extended that lead to a game-high 14 points before Dortch quickly answered with a layup. The margin fluctuated between 12 and 14 points for the next few moments, before a pair of steals led to back-to-back layups for Zanoguera. The Rockets were within 10 points, 27-17.
But, the Falcons responded. An offensive rebound by freshman Jasmine Matthews was followed by a Toledo foul, and Matthews knocked down a pair of free throws at the 4:39 mark. Just under two minutes later, Matthews spotted a wide-open Allison Papenfuss for a short jumper, and the Falcons had a 31-17 lead with under three minutes left in the half.
Toledo had a total of just one offensive rebound in the game's first 17 minutes, but the Rockets got three offensive boards on the next possession. The third board came from Richardson, who quickly kicked it out to Linn for an open three at the 2:15 mark.
The only other points of the first half came from Steffen. After the junior came up with an offensive rebound to keep a possession alive, she concluded that possession with a runner in the lane for a 33-20 BG lead with 57 seconds left in the half. The Falcons took that lead into the break.
The Rockets, after shooting just 32.1% in the first 20 minutes, went 4-for-4 to begin the second half. That hot-shooting stretch came in the first two minutes of the half, and suddenly, the Falcons' lead was just five points at 33-28. Dortch and Richardson each scored four points during that 8-0 run.
Steffen got to the line and hit a pair of tosses with 3:17 gone, for BG's first points of the half, and Havel knocked down a short-corner jumper for a 37-28 BG lead with just under 16 minutes left in the game. But, the Rockets kept coming.
Zanoguera put back her own miss to start a 6-0 run. After a Richardson jumper, another layup by Zanoguera cut BG's lead to 37-34 with 13:35 left. Steffen quickly responded with a layup at the other end, and that shot was followed by a scoreless stretch of over three minutes.
Rogers broke that drought, hitting a long two-pointer with just under 10 minutes left. Dortch responded with a jumper in the paint, however, and Linn's jumper at the 8:53 mark cut BG's lead to just three points.
Dortch, however, was whistled for her fourth foul of the game with 7:47 left, as the teams headed into a media timeout. During that timeout the officials ruled that a shot by Rogers, taken just before the Dortch foul, counted, giving the Falcons a five-point lead and an opportunity for a three-point play. Out of the timeout, Rogers hit the free throw for a 44-38 BG lead.
Richardson scored easily, but Rogers responded with a layup to restore the six-point lead with 5:40 remaining. Another Richardson layup cut the lead to 46-42, but Rogers blew past Richardson for a layup and a 48-42 lead with 4:49 left. That shot, however, would be the Falcons' final field goal of the day.
Lecretia Smith hit a pair of free throws out of the game's final media timeout, but Rogers drew a foul on Richardson at the other end and made two throws for a 50-44 lead with 3:36 left. The Falcons would not score again.
Richardson missed a shot inside, but a three-point try by Matthews would not drop, as the clock ticked under three minutes. Linn forced a three-point shot that didn't fall, but a Slagle pull-up jumper was no good with 2:18 remaining.
Ten seconds later, Dortch was fouled and hit a pair of shots from the stripe, beginning the game-closing 8-0 run. After a BG three-point try was off the mark, Dortch came up with the rebound and wound up hitting a layup at the other end with 1:40 remaining. The Falcons missed a layup try on the next possession, setting the stage for Ingersoll's triple.
The Rockets had a 37-33 rebounding advantage, including a 24-12 margin in the second half. Havel had a game-high 10 boards for the Falcons, while Ingersoll had seven for the Rockets.
BGSU was 4-of-17 from three-point land, with Steffen making all four of her team's triples in eight long-range attempts. The Falcons went 0-for-9 from beyond the arc after halftime.
The Rockets were just 2-for-9 from three-point range, with Linn's first-half trey and Ingersoll's game-winning shot the only long-distance tries that would drop for the home side.
Saturday's game concluded BGSU's six-game stretch against the MAC's West Division schools. The Falcons return home and return to intradivisional play on Wednesday (Feb. 15), hosting the University at Buffalo at the Stroh Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
