Ali Named Second-Team All-MAC
March 26, 2012 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green's Jamilah Ali was named second-team All-MAC, announced this afternoon by the conference office.
It is the second time in three days Ali has been honored by the Mid-American Conference. On Saturday afternoon she was named MAC Freshman of the Year, just the third Falcon to earn the award, and the first since 1999.
This season, Ali owned BGSU's top two all-around scores, two of the top four performances on vault, two of the top five on floor and the top eight performances on beam.
Ali saved some of her best performances of the season when it counted most, scoring a 38.825 in the all-around, a 9.850 on vault and 9.850 on floor at the MAC Championships to finish sixth, fourth and fifth among 42 competitors.
The freshman scored a career-best 38.975 in the all-around in the home finale versus Eastern Michigan. In that same meet she added a 9.850 on vault, 9.650 on bars (season-best), 9.800 on beam and 9.675 on floor.
Ali's specialties this season were on vault and beam, two events she won on a regular basis. Ali captured victories on vault four different occasions this season, including a 9.850 versus EMU and Northern Illinois, a 9.825 in a near upset over West Virginia and a 9.775 at Pittsburgh. While her vault accomplishments were impressive, what she did on the balance beam was remarkable.
In 12 meets the freshman broke 9.800 eight different times and finished the year with six individual victories on beam alone. Ali recorded a season-best 9.850 at Ball State and at the MAC Championships (not a win). She added victories at Western Michigan (9.825), at Maryland (9.825), Eastern Michigan (9.800), West Virginia (9.800) and at Pittsburgh (9.800).
Ali was no slouch on floor or bars either. She posted a career-best 9.850 at the MAC Championships and added a 9.825 at Kent State earlier this year on floor. She also scored 9.775's at Pittsburgh and Missouri on the same event. Ali scored a season-best 9.650 versus the Eagles in a tune-up for the MAC Championships on bars.
Ali is expected to qualify for Regionals on beam, but that announcement is expected late Monday or early Tuesday morning. Stay tuned to bgsufalcons.com for up-to-the-minute announcements.
