Halfhill's honor marks the fourth time this season that a BGSU player has earned at least one weekly honor from College Sports Madness. Junior Chrissy Steffen was named both the National High-Major P-O-W and the MAC P-O-W by the web site on Jan. 2, while redshirt soph Alexis Rogers earned the MAC P-O-W honor the following Monday (Jan. 9), then earned both the MAC and the National High-Major award on Jan. 23.
Halfhill, a native of Canfield, Ohio, earns this week's MAC P-O-W honor after exploding for 17 points in just 19 minutes in the Falcons' lone game last week, a 91-48 win at Kent State on Tuesday night (Feb. 28). The victory clinched the outright MAC regular-season title and the number-one seed for the MAC Tournament for the Falcons.
Halfhill had 15 of her points in the first half, including seven of the Falcons' 13 points in a 13-0 run that gave BGSU a 20-4 lead. She scored nine points in her first four minutes after entering the game, then hit a pair of three-pointers just before the half. Those two triples came in the final minute of the period, including a trey at the first-half buzzer that gave the Falcons a 41-19 lead at the break.
Halfhill hit her first four shots of the night en route to a 6-of-8 performance vs. the Golden Flashes. She was 3-for-5 from three-point land, and also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Halfhill's point total at KSU was the second-highest of her career, and was her most points by far in a MAC game. Her previous best in a conference contest was four points.
On the season, Halfhill is averaging 4.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. She has made 17 three-point field goals this year, tied for third on the team.
The Falcons are 24-5 overall, and BGSU finished conference play with a 14-2 record. BG's outright league title was the team's seventh in the last eight seasons, and the Falcons have won a divisional crown in all eight of those years.
In addition to Halfhill's weekly honor, three other Falcons were recently recognized by College Sports Madness, as the web site named its All-MAC Team. Rogers was named to the all-league first team, while Steffen was named to the third team and senior Jessica Slagle was chosen to the fourth team.
The College Sports Madness site, www.collegesportsmadness.com, names national players of the week at each of three levels (national, high-major and mid-major), and also recognizes a P-O-W from each of 33 NCAA Division-I conferences.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller have earned a berth in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament, and will play an opponent to be determined on Friday (March 9) afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for shortly after 12:00 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland.
