Falcons Lose 3-2 To Central Michigan

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Central Michigan Sunday afternoon, falling to the Chippewas by a score of 3-2. Junior Paige Berger led the Falcons offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Freshman Jamie Kertes picked up the loss, giving up two earned runs and seven hits in three innings of work.

Central Michigan drew first blood, scoring the first three runs of the contest to take the early lead. The Chippewas scored their first two runs in the opening frame, crossing home plate two times on three hits in the first. CMU scored again, to push the score to 3-0 in favor of the Choppewas on two hits in the top of the second.

The Falcons finally responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on three hits in the frame.

After a Bowling Green strikeout, freshman Chloe Giordano doubled to right field. Junior Hannah Fulk then reached on a fielder's choice, resulting in a Falcon out at third base. Senior Rachel Proehl singled through the left side of the infield, moving Fulk to second. Berger then came to the plate, and shot a single into right field to bring Fulk home. With runners at first and third, Bowling Green attempted a double steal, allowing Proehl to score for the second and final Falcon run.

Bowling Green was unable to cross home plate again in the game, eventually falling to Central Michigan 3-2.

“We don't take anything for granted, this is the MAC,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “There is a lot of parody and they (Central Michigan) are a good team, and they showed it by coming out and putting three runs on us so quick. I'm proud of the kids because we battled and continued to fight. We found ways to get people on, it just didn't happen today.”

The Falcons (25-16. 9-3 MAC) are back in action Wednesday against Eastern Kentucky at Meserve Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
