BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- In their final stroke play event prior to the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team battled to a tie for fifth place through a weekend full of adverse weather conditions. The Falcons concluded the two-day, 36-hole event with a 325 on Sunday (April 15).
BGSU ended the event with a composite 649 (324-325), which matched the scores attained by Loyola University of Chicago. The Orange and Brown finished eight shots ahead of MAC foe Northern Illinois, who earned seventh place with 657 (330-327). The team fell three shots shy of Detroit Mercy, who placed fourth. Fellow MAC foe Ohio University was third after shooting 639.
The University of Indianapolis captured the team championship by scoring 626 (314-312), which was ten shots better than Oakland.
Shelby Wilson continued her stellar play with a tie for fourth after carding a 155 (76-79) during the weekend's two rounds. Her career-best finish is the third top-ten result in her last four tournaments, and it is BGSU's first top-five result since Bailey Arnold won the Redbird Invitational to open the season.
Wilson was one of only five golfers to have sub-80 scores in both rounds this weekend. Darin Pinnick of Indianapolis won the individual championship after shooting a 148, which included a tournament-record 70 on Sunday.
Bailey Arnold and Patricia Holt each earned spots in the top 30 of the final leaderboard. Arnold tied for 22nd place with a 163 (81-82). Holt shot back-to-back 82s to earn a tie for 29th place.
Two Falcon players were tied for 37th -- Amy Ruthenberg shot 167 after rounds of 85 and 82, while Kelsey Benson posted rounds of 82 and 85 to match Ruthenberg. Benson played as an individual this weekend.
In her final round as a Falcon at her home tournament, Paula DiFrancesco carded an 82 to end the tournament with a 168. Jen Blanchard, who also played as an individual, rounded out BGSU's scoring by shooting 172 (82-90).
Bowling Green has one final regular season event, and it takes place on Monday (April 16) at the Red Hawk golf course in Findlay, Ohio. BGSU will square off against Ohio in the teams' annual Spring Challenge Cup match-play competition. More details, including pairings, will be available on BGSUFalcons.com as soon as they are available.
The MAC Championships begin in just under two weeks, on Friday, April 27th.
