Four other Falcons earn honorable mention
Two Bowling Green State University women's basketball captains have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Senior Jessica Slagle and junior Chrissy Steffen were selected to the team, which was announced Monday (April 16) by the conference office.
Both Slagle and Steffen were named to the 2011-12 team after earning honorable mention in 2010-11. The team is the result of voting by the faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 12 student-athletes were named to the Academic All-MAC Team (due to ties in the voting), with an additional 18 earning honorable mention.
BGSU was one of three schools to have two student-athletes named to the team. Akron and Toledo were the others.
UA's Sina King and Taylor Ruper joined Slagle and Steffen on the team, as did Buffalo's Teresa Semalulu, Eastern Michigan's Natachia Watkins, Trisha Krewson of Kent State, Miami's Courtney Osborn, Ohio's Tenishia Benson, UT's Courtney Ingersoll and Haylie Linn and Western Michigan's Maria Iaquaniello.
Slagle, a native of Sidney, Ohio (Lehman Catholic H.S.), was a team tri-captain and an All-MAC Second-Team selection in her senior season. She started all 31 games, averaging 12.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game to rank third on the team in scoring and fourth in rebounding. Slagle also averaged a team-high 2.5 assists along with 1.5 steals per outing. In MAC games only, she scored 13.4 ppg to rank second on the team, and she led the Falcons with 3.1 assists. Normally a two guard, she moved to the point-guard position for the majority of her senior season and thrived at that spot. Slagle scored a career-high 23 points in her final collegiate game, vs. VCU in the WNIT. She earned MAC Player-of-the-Week honors on two occasions during her final season, and finished her career with totals of 726 points and 167 assists.
Slagle, a visual communication technology (VCT) major at BGSU, has a 3.46 cumulative GPA through her first three and a year years at the school.
Steffen, a native of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.), joined Slagle and Danielle Havel as 2011-12 team tri-captains. The Falcons' only returning starter from the 2010-11 season, Steffen was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team in '11-12. She started every game and led the team in scoring, with 13.2 points per game. Steffen also had 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per outing, tying for the team lead in steals and ranking second in assists and third in rebounding. Steffen paced the Falcons with 22 double-digit scoring games, including a BG-best six games of 20 points or more, and she hit a team-leading 53 three-point field goals on the year. Through three years in the Brown and Orange, Steffen has career totals of 853 points, 350 rebounds, 149 assists and 126 three-point field goals made..
Steffen, an adolescent/young adult/secondary education major, has a 3.59 cumulative GPA through the fall 2011 semester.
The Academic All-MAC honor is given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify for consideration, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
As mentioned, 12 players, including Slagle and Steffen, were voted to the Academic All-MAC Team. A total of 18 additional players, including four Falcons, earned honorable mention. The list of BGSU players includes Havel and sophomores Jillian Halfhill, Jill Stein and Noelle Yoder.
BGSU and Akron (six apiece) have the most total honorees of any of the 12 MAC institutions.
The Falcons posted an overall record of 24-7 and a MAC mark of 14-2 in 2011-12. BGSU won the East Division title, capturing a divisional crown for the eighth consecutive year. The Falcons had the league's best overall regular-season record for the seventh time in those eight years, and BGSU advanced to national postseason play for the eighth-straight year.
