Rogers, Giese take home Awards as BGSU Celebrates Athletics Honors Night
April 23, 2012 | Women's Basketball
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standouts Alexis Rogers and Maribeth Giese took home two of the highest honors awarded by the BGSU Department of Athletics on Saturday night (April 21). The department held its annual Athletics Honors Night, recognizing and awarding student-athletes for their successes in and out of competition.
Rogers was named the BGSU Female Athlete of the Year, while Giese was the female recipient of the Senior Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award. Both the athlete-of-the-year and Senior S-A-O-T-Y honors are given to just one male and one female student-athlete at BGSU each year.
Rogers, a native of West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West H.S.), was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team in her first playing season with the Falcons. A transfer from Duke University, she also was a WBCA Coaches' All-America Team honorable-mention selection in 2011-12, after being named one of 52 regional finalists. Rogers was named MAC Player of the Week three times. She started all 31 games, averaging 12.3 points and a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game.
Rogers ranked second on the Falcons in scoring, and tied for the team lead in steals (55, 1.8 per game). She hit 18 three-point field goals, tying for third on the Falcons in that category. In MAC games only, she paced the Falcons in both scoring and rebounding in MAC games, with 15.1 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Rogers was the only player in the league to be ranked in the top-five in both categories, as she was fourth in scoring and second in rebounding in MAC games. She had 10 double-doubles, including seven in MAC regular-season play and one more in the conference tournament.
Giese, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Mother of Mercy), was medically disqualified in the preseason, seeing her playing career come to an end. She saw action in a total of 32 games in her career, and helped the Falcons to four MAC East Division titles and four trips to the national postseason. Giese, a political science major, has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average through the fall 2011 semester.
At the Athletics Honors Night, the Department gave out numerous awards throughout the evening and honored a number of supporters of the program as well.
The evening began by honoring the 210 student-athletes who carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and the 24 who hold a perfect 4.0. From there, 31 new members of Chi Alpha Sigma Ohio Xi (National College Athlete Honor Society) were recognized and received their cords.
The Student-Athlete Leadership Class was recognized, followed by the awarding of the highest team GPA awards. The women's tennis team earned the female award with a 3.69 grade point average and the men's cross country team garnered the male award with a 3.33 grade point average.
From there, the department awarded supporters of the student-athletes. Jill Carr, the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the lives of BGSU's student-athletes. Former swimmer, William Primrose III, who serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees, was given the Distinguished Alumnus Award and he gave the keynote speech.
Following Primrose's speech, Champions Circle donors were recognized, as were all student-athletes who received conference athletic awards throughout the year. At that point, individual awards were given out to student-athletes.
Volleyball player Kari Galen (3.727 grade point average) and men's soccer player Zach Lemke (3.607 GPA) were named the Junior Scholar-Athlete Award winners, while Giese and baseball player Patrick Martin (3.7 grade point average) earned the Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Rogers and baseball player Jon Berti were named the department's Athletes of the Year. For Berti, it was the second consecutive year in which he won the award.
Finally, the Falcon Medal of Honor was presented. The highest honor given to a student-athlete at BGSU, the Falcon Medal of Honor captures athletic success, academic success, and service to the community together. Swimmer Sarah Reinink and baseball player Patrick Martin were presented with the 2011-12 Falcon Medals of Honor.
