April 06, 2012 | Men's Golf
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team resumes play on Saturday (April 7) with a trip to Penn State University for the 2012 Rutherford Intercollegiate. The two-day event will be played at PSU's Blue Course.
A field of 14 teams will participate in the 54-hole tournament, which will feature a par-71, 7,202-yard course layout. The Falcons will be opposed by two other Mid-American Conference schools -- Miami and Eastern Michigan. The team will also get to face St. Bonaventure for the second time this season. St. Bonaventure's head coach is former BGSU golfer John Powers.
Aside from tournament host Penn State, the other nine competing teams include: Army, Canisius, Connecticut, Delaware, George Mason, Indiana (Pa.), Rutgers, Towson, as well as William and Mary.
The tournament will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, and players will face 36 holes. The final round is scheduled to begin with 8:00 a.m. tee times.
BGSU will be sending six golfers to compete; five will participate as a team along with one competing as an individual.
The travel team for this weekend includes Charlie Olson and Parker Hewit. Through 20 rounds this season, Olson and Hewit are separated by only one total stroke. Olson leads the team with a 75.20 average (1504 total), while Hewit currently holds a 75.25 average.
Olson has played 18 of 20 rounds this year with sub-80 scores and has earned top-20 finishes in five of seven starts, which includes two top-tens. Hewit matches Olson with two top-tens to tie for the team lead.
Drew Preston and Wes Gates are also separated by only one stroke for the entire season. Preston (76.10 average) has the team's best round of the entire season (69) and shot the team's best 18-hole score (72) at the most recent event, the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic. Gates owns BGSU's only top-five finish of the season to date.
Chris Melvin and Joe Cooper will also be competing for the Falcons this weekend. Cooper leads the four Falcons who have not competed in each tournament with a 77.55 average. He also has a top-20 finish to his name (13th, John Piper Intercollegiate).
Live scoring for the tournament is not available; however, results and a complete recap will be posted after the conclusion of play on both days of the event.
